Rihanna Interview On MTV’s ‘On With Alex Chung’

Singer (and you use that term loosely) Rihanna was recently featured on MTV’s ‘On With Alex Chung’. Ms. Fenty discussed her ’20/20′ interview with Dianne Sawyer,  her new album ‘Rated R’, and her fashion choices among other things. Rihanna’s new single ‘Russian Roulette’ currently sits at #75 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #49 on the Hip-Hop/R&B charts – and is struggling on iTunes. ‘Rated R’ hits stores on November 20th. Peep part 1 above and part 2 below:

This was the typical light-hearted interview that exemplifies most album promotional ventures. One thing that I did notice, however, is the dynamic nature of Rihanna’s accent. Anyone else notice how her Bajan accent almost completely disappeared during the interview? As a Caribbean native myself (Trinidad and Tobago!), this is something that we observe to be quite the norm with West Indians. People from the region go to the States and abandon every aspect of their culture, with their accent being the first thing to go. It seems that Rihanna only remembers where she comes from when it suits her marketing strategy. That’s a damn shame.

Thoughts?

I totally agree with the accent thing which was my beef with her from the jump, her first single being a reggae/dancehall “hit” but after that she released nothing but pop tunes. I felt she shouldve stayed close to her roots but I guess she’s just another sell out. People argued with me saying she was never a Soca/Dancehall artist but I feel as though was she a pop tart back in Barbados and now shes this punk rock/ urban artist…can’t say that I buy it.

  2. Drey2R4U November 9, 2009

So you downplay her because she switches up her accent so people can understand her better? Why must we judge?

  3. Nicky November 9, 2009

    Currently stalled at #75?
    lol….

RR is top 10 on itunes in over 10 countries thus far. lol.
RR will be in the top 10 for this chart.

Are Trinidadians ignorant and dumb? I think so.

  4. Nicky November 9, 2009

Its okay to not like someone, its okay to not like someones music but it is not okay to bend the truth in your favor and expect to be respected. Trent I know you wanna keep your little job so you jump on Sam’s ‘I hate Rihanna’ bandwagon but do report the facts.
Russian Roulette debuted on the charts last week so how the hell has it stalled? When has it had the time to stall?
Russian Roulette is not Critically Panned like you and sam try to say it is as a matter of fact it has recieved generally positive reviews so grow up and stop trying to warp the truth in your favor.
Also whenever anyone moves to a diffrent place their accents change or they temporarily lose them its nature, not selling out, it happens all the time especially in the US since we are so diverse, so I repeat Grow Up.
Opinions are respected Haters are not.

your always hating on Rihanna, it seems like you just try to find things not to like about her. Now your complaining about her accent? and Rihanna mmay not be the best singer, and honestly im not even a fan but shes not the worst singer there are plenty of singers out that are worst than her. i personally think her vocals got a little stronger. and her single is stalled at number 76? haha damn you are a hater.

  9. THAT P*** JUICE November 9, 2009

^ On top of that her digital sales just came out and she’s predicted to be top 5 next week

  10. Jae November 9, 2009

    @ San

Ummm, you don’t change your accent when you move in your LATE TEENS. Typical US mentality that you just get in where you fit in and “conform”…no one is allowed to have any outside pride, my God..

So someone from Atlanta is suddenly going to sound all east coast because they moved to the bronx in their LATE TEENS when their accent is already loooong formed and established? Get the f*** outta here….

All that ranting aside, I still hear the accent lol

  11. denise November 9, 2009

9 times outta 10, the main people that are hating/talking s*** on rihanna are beyonce stans

so to the beyonce ASS KISSERS…why dont ya’ll go watch a video of beyonce where she is doing what she does best, that is, DRESSING HALF NAKED and SHAKINGHER ASS

  12. Deirdre B Pride November 9, 2009

This was my first time seeing this show. I thought Rhianna looked happy, secure and confident. Ms Chung was really funny. I enjoyed the show.

  13. dont take shyt November 9, 2009

Sorry to bust you I hate Rihanna bubble but Russian Roulette debuted at #100 last week and it is #75 for its 2nd week so in actuality it moved up 25 spots it has not stalled
    Keep it real

  14. San November 9, 2009

    @Jae
Take a class on voice and Dialect then come and talk to me.
you pick up the accent and dialect of where you live so yes someone from Atlanta can move to texas and after living there a few years can begin to have a change in dialect. It works the same way for someone from England or Barbados who comes to the US to live, at first their dialect will be very strong but then it will begin to change to the dialect of their surroundings, ask my British Voice and Dialect Professor B****. Now you get the F*** out of here.

  15. Toni November 9, 2009

Sam, I am shocked at your disdain for RR. Clearly you just can’t stand the girl. Her accent is obivious in the clip. The girl is talented and yes she is a singer. Singers come in various levels of talent: ballandeers, interpreters, and those that can hold a melodic tune. Get a grip and start reporting with fairness.

  16. Anon November 9, 2009

Hahaha, you edited out the word “stalled” but then you added that she’s “struggling” at iTunes. Once again, you are so full of sh** it’s coming out your ears.

Russian Roulette was number 2 at iTunes nearly all last week. Now it has fallen, but is still in the top 10. How is this “struggling” when so many songs have never even cracked the top 10 at all? Why aren’t you saying Chris Brown is “struggling” at iTunes because his song has been out for weeks and hasn’t cracked the top 10? RR is outselling the new Lady GaGa and is currently selling nearly as well as the new Britney (after being ahead of her all last week).

The only way you wouldn’t somehow say Rihanna was doing bad on the charts would be if she was at #1 all the time – and even if she was, you would say something like “she’s only there because of all the hype and publicity.” She just can’t win with you, can she?

I can’t wait for RR to be in the top 10 of the Hot 100 when the list comes out this week…and you will call it a FAILURE because she’s not #1.

  17. Anon November 9, 2009

p.s. You also got the Release date for “Rated R” wrong…accident or intentional?

God this website is so f*cking pathetic.

  18. Ps November 9, 2009

LOL…. at the person who said THATPISSJUICE… i think m gonna start using it to refer 2 the site, anybody noticed on how dis site got the worst layout ever, and they have the nerve to hate on talented people, the site is only supplying us with s***. and russian roulette isnt strungling at all, its blowing up on radio and its top 10 on i tunes, dis week its gonna go straight to top 10 whether u like it or not, doing much better chris browns transform which has been over 2months but hasnt even reach top 10 or 20 for dat matter. so shut the f*** up THATPISSJUICE.COM

  19. Anon November 9, 2009

PS – you’re right, the “new” layout F’ing sucks and is no better than the old one. Talk about budget “recession era” LMFAO this site looks like some geocities trash from the 90’s!

  20. Justin November 9, 2009

To be honnest with you i heard the opposite and i come from a bajan family. I find Rihanna used to try really hard to play down the bajan accent but this is the most bajan i’ve ever heard her sound during a major interview!

  21. doble November 9, 2009

completely agree with SAN. if she’s spending most of her time in the US, of course she’s going to pick up some of the american accent. and it’s not like she sounds like a new yorker either–you can totally still hear her bajan accent.

i’m not necessarily a fan of rihanna either, but damn, the haterade is strong with this one.

  22. Justin November 9, 2009

i’m sorry i just watched this interview again and i still can’t comprehend how you thought she was dropping her accent. if anything she sound like the service workers in Barbados who work with tourists so they kind off clean up the rawness of their accent so that they can be fully comprehended.

  23. Lulu November 10, 2009

this accent debate is silly, but i can relate i have lived in many countries since i was 5 because my father is a diplomat i mean i have lived in south africa, india, east africa, america and uk..im now 24 in the UK so it does happen and i experienced in the US that its the number 1 country that expects everyone to sound American as diverse as it may be there is still a stigma if u dont sound like them..so melting pot my ass,but she is still young and prob very influenced
and people usually say they can’t make out my accent saying i sound english to american even afrikaans the last person who said ‘man u hav a f&%# up accent’ i said wht does it matter i’m a world traveller…womp

  24. Li November 10, 2009

I am with SAN on this one… I lvoe your comment… All Sam has done is got a replica of himself, Trent is bringing nothing new to ‘ThatPissJuice’, well done to the person who thought of that one. I realised this when I read the post on Alexandra Burkes next single, and now this one on Rihanna, I only knew it wasnt Sam cos he aint from Trinidad and Tobago…

If you are going to make a blog like this work and taken seriously, by the industry and the people who read ur site alike, it would be nice to lose the sloppy journalism that comes with all the posts. The posts are full of biased opinions who in hindsight nobody wants to here. The thing is though, I think that is what TGJ is about, getting attention and drama… As opposed to being reputable and known for trying to be influential. Having worked for Touch Magazine (RIP) this kind of writing and opinion would in no way be accepted. Its sloppy, over opinionated and in most cases unnecessary. Its a shame that the FACTS about all these artists you diss on a constant basis, overshine the facts of where the artists you take such a kiss a*** approach to stand. This is why TGJ, regardless of how much you give the site a makeover (it looks rather cheap and annoying to look at by the way). TGJ has STALLED, besides getting an additional biaised opinion (Trent) and adding a few extra posts daily, TGJ will never make it past being just a blog…

  25. bobs November 10, 2009

Sam didn’t write this blow-hards. There are two haters on this site.
I guess you can say this single has stalled if you call 7000 spins at radio after 2 week, and peaking at #1 at itunes stalled. It will rocket to top 20 this week.

  26. bobs November 10, 2009

This reminds me off all the HATE Beyonce received when she released Deja-Va. People just wanted to hate her. Why does it have to be so horrible?

  27. SEAN November 10, 2009

Trent, I’m very happy that you and Sam have started a sexual relationship! Good on you! You shouldn’t allow him to force his opinions on you though, stop with the propaganda! You guys have to stop hating!

On the other hand, I’ve never seen Rihanna so relaxed and at ease before, I’ve really warmed to her! And her Bravian accent is very clear, she’s been in the US since 2005 so I’m surprised that she hasn’t lost the accent at all!

  28. GAbby November 15, 2009

I understand why she switches it off and on. Its becasue she wants the public to understand her. Its not that she is abandoning her roots. its simple, if we come to a country where they dont speak like us then they wont understand what we have to say. plain and simple.
