Cover Star: Brad Doggett Sings Trey Songz’s ‘I Invented Sex’

Published: Saturday 14th Aug 2010 by Trent

This week’s Cover Star is none other than Brad Doggett. The 22 year old singer from Washington D.C. put put his own unique spin on Trey Songz’s ‘I Invented Sex’ in a way that many would not have anticipated. Check out his performance below:

That was incredible! Instead of trying to imitate Songz’s vocal style, Doggett decide to go in a completely different direction both vocally and musically. Simply fantastic.

Check more of Doggett’s music here.

Let me be the first to say…….WOW!!!!!!!! Take notes People….Because some performers today can’t find a note. I wish this young man much success and I hope he never loses his Spirit or Soul in this music industry.

    @Trent —

…. FLAT, DRY, STRIPPED-DOWN and DETACHED, therefore “WITHOUT BODY” ; Trent, YOU wanted know … !! I guess you think Trey, or those, highly-skilled musicians around him, hadn’t AlREADY thought, when originally-crafting THAT song, of an “acoustic-only accompaniment!”

So what “grabs you” is the difference in the presentation of the same song, yes?

Well, if you’re not “afraid of time,” then go and listen to Spandau Ballet’s ‘True’. It was released back in the 80’s, when, they were at THEIR peak: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6e4WLdLNajs&feature=av2e

… THEN, listen to THIS version by Joanna Wang: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tFt5-H2ocw <–Who'd have thought to use, not only an acoustic guitar, but also congo drums, and a piano at THAT pace/tempo, setting THAT mood! You wanna talk about "changing up" a song … COMPLETELY(?), then go and listen to BOTH versions!

Oh, and Ms. Wang did the arrangement ..!! That means, she not-only had to know HOW to place the acoustic guitar, but also the piano, congo drums AND her sultry-dark vocals! Just do YOURSELVES a favor and go and listen to both versions, THEN come back and listen to THIS "brad person" ; THEN you'll appreciate TRUE musicianship …!!

    … I'll wait ….

That was simply fabulous!!! I really liked the fact that he took that song and made it his own all the way through….Just goes to show that you don’t need the studio or the hype to be a great performer. All it takes is true passion for music and “RAW” talent of course… GREAT JOB BRAD!!!

    @Trent —

… I see you’re “taken” with the different rearrangement of an artist’s work. I’m not sure if you’re really into Roberta Flack, I am! But I’d like to, share with you, HER reworking of Leonard Cohen’s Suzanne. Here’s HIS(the original)version: beemp3.com/download.php?file=7342827&song=Suzanne

    … And Roberta’s rearrangement/reworking : beemp3.com/download.php?file=2978684&song=Suzanne

    And here, the lyrics(ENJOY):

Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by
You can spend the night beside her
And you know that she’s half crazy
But that’s why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges
That come all the way from China
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you’ve always been her lover
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For you’ve touched her perfect body with your mind.
    And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
    From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said “All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them”
    But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
    Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
And you want to travel with him
And you want to travel blind
And you think maybe you’ll trust him
For he’s touched your perfect body with his mind.
    Now Suzanne takes your hand
And she leads you to the river
She is wearing rags and feathers
    From Salvation Army counters
And the sun pours down like honey
On our lady of the harbour
And she shows you where to look
Among the garbage and the flowers
There are heroes in the seaweed
There are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love
And they will lean that way forever
    While Suzanne holds the mirror
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that you can trust her
For she’s touched your perfect body with her mind.

    X,Y,”and Z” — OUT …!!
