Winning : Rihanna’s ‘Talk That Talk’ Reenters UK Top 5

Winning : Rihannas Talk That Talk Reenters UK Top 5

Her US Navy may continue to disappoint her on a sales front, but it would seem very few can match the buying power of Rihanna’s British fan base.

Not sure what we mean?

Details below…

Despite being released in November 2011, the model’s latest LP ‘Talk That Talk‘ has reentered the UK Top 5, 36 weeks after release.

Rising one spot from last week, the Pop piece now sits pretty at #5, outselling Adele‘s ’21′ which is this week’s #9 and Nicki Minaj‘s ‘Roman Reloaded‘ which holds court at  #24.

Rihanna isn’t the only one making major moves on the charts this week. For, in what marks an impressive sales boost within the last seven days, Rita Ora‘s ‘Hot Right Now‘ rose by 36 spots- now giving her the benefit of two singles in the Top 100.

This, before the launch of her debut album ‘ORA’ on August 27th.

Your thoughts?

Good for her. It’s nice that people are still purchasing her music even though she’s on vacation and not thinking about work. Even a fake pregnancy couldn’t help a certain lace-front wearing woman when she was “away”. It just shows how relevant Rihanna currently is.

Talk That Talk is being sold at quite low prices though, in most places it’s £5 or less. Not denying that she can sell albums here just saying that it probably helped. Either way congrats to her!

Well, Gaga, sold her album for 99 cents and some free cloud storage space and I don’t hear people going on and on about that every time she gets a post. Rihanna, is selling albums months after the initial release and that’s what matters and is the subject of this particular post.

The FLOP-Hive all of the sudden don’t care about the UK market. Look, there are three markets record labels care about, the USA, UK and Japan (in that order) because those are the three biggest music markets. If you flop in all of these markets, you flop everywhere.

Also Beyonce has NOT sold 200 million records, she has sold 40 something million records so stop lying FLOP-Hive.

    • This is so innacurate. Actually, Germany is the biggest music market in Europe according to IFPI. If you flop in these markets, you can to better in others. Shakira’s She Wolf flopped in these markets, but it sold more than 1 million only in South America. Beyoncé’s IASF and 4 were more successful in Brazil than in Japan, for example.
Beyoncé sold at least 60 million RECORDS + 50 million with Destiny’s Child = 110 million Records. Most of her records aren’t $1 singles like you know who. LOL.

You’re right, that is inaccurate, here is a much better analysis.

The list should look like this.

        1 JAPAN $30.97 per person
        2 UK $22.01 per person
        3 AUSTRALIA $17.36 per person
        4 GERMANY $17.28 per person
        5 NETHERLANDS $15.66 per person
        6 USA $13.38 per person
        7 FRANCE $13.24 per person
        8 CANADA $11.43 per person
        9 ITALY per person$3.91
        10 BRAZIL $1.16 per person

More people are buying music per person in the UK than Germany despite Germany having a larger population. The USA may be the biggest market but as you pointed out, Shakira sold over a million in South America than anywhere else so I guess we can throw that “Rihanna is just doing well in the UK” argument out of the window because it does not fly.

      • What’s more important:
        1) You have 100 people buying a t-shirt for $1 (You get $100);
        or
        2) You have 50 people buying a t-shirt for $1 (You get $50).
I’ll go with the 1 option.
Germany’s music market made $2,026.2 (in millions). UK made $2,002.4.
IFPI, which is a reliable market, says that Germany is the 3rd biggest market. Who are you to go against them? DEAD.
And UK’s market is decreasing faster than Germany’s.

Maybe you should restate your comment. Your comment should be what would be much more better,

        1.) You have 100 people buying a t-shirt for $1 (You get $100)

        2.) You have 50 people buying a t-shirt for $3 ( You get $150).

I used the IFPI figures as well as the World Bank figures for population and I came up with a much more comprehensive analysis. The fact remains UK consumers spend more on music than do Germans.

If you are so pressed on “population”, why are the following markets ignored?

China 1.5 Billion people, 230 Million middle class
India 1 Billion people, 50 Million middle class
Africa 1 Billion people, 120 Million middle class

Those markets are ignored, why?? That’s because if we use per capita figures, we get much more realistic figures.

      • “I used the IFPI figures as well as the World Bank”. YOU USED. You’re using an argument based on YOUR OPINION. No one cares about what you think. What it does matter is OFFICIAL NUMBERS. If IFPI, which is official and used by labels, said that Germany is the 3th biggest market so it is. In the end of the day, what matters is the MONEY that the label is getting.
Germany still is the 3rd biggest market. Case Closed.

I don’t think you understood any of my statements so i’m going to bold it up for you.

The fact remains UK consumers spend more on music than do Germans.

This is a FACT based on per capita figures (not my opinion). I never denied that Germany is the third largest music market, I said UK consumers spend more on music than do German consumers. This is based on value of music sold (figures courtesy of IFPI) by population (figures courtesy of World Bank). Germany might have a larger population but their consumers spend less on music than do the British. And even though in real terms, Germany is a larger market, in per capita terms their consumers spend less on music than do British consumers. There is no way I could make my statement any simpler.

LMAO making excuses for BeYAWNce. You forget to mention that NON of the singles from 4closure made any impact on the Hot 100. They were pretty much chart fillers. Rihanna’s songs always make an impact on the Hot 100. And dead at the FLOP-Hive thinking singles do not add up. A single adds to the overall success of an album, why do you think Kelly Rowland still has her record deal despite selling 200K of “Here I am”? it’s because “Motivation” sold a million.

Now Rihanna can do that 10x over and that adds to the success of the album. Singles add up to the overall success of the album, that is why Carly Rae Jepsen is still hot despite not having an album out. It is called “diversification”, companies do it, countries do it and so do artists. For example, most of Rihanna’s music videos are “VEVO Certified” earning her royalties from that, a lot of her singles are always played on the radio earning her more royalties, a lot of singles sold earning her more coin as well and you add up album sales to that and you have a successful megastar artist.

The FLOP-Hive are reaching today LMAO, you’re gonna have to deal.

Really? What were the impact of You Da Flop, Talk That Flop and Birthday Flop on the Hot 100? If 4′s singles performed that bad and TTT’s singles performed better, so why did 4 still managed to sell 400k more than it? LOL. WFL was one of the biggest hits of the year and it didn’t help to Rihanna sell her album.
“Rihanna’s music videos are “VEVO Certified” earning her royalties from that”

Nope, it shows that Rihanna’s fans support her in every way. Just because BeYAWNce’s fans are too old to embrace the digital age does not mean Rihanna’s fans should not embrace every new thing she brings on the table.

If an album brings in coin from Video royalties + singles + radio royalties + album sales, once that all adds up, it looks a lot better than 0 video royalties + flop singles + single airplay + album sales that just scratched a million. • “Just because BeYAWNce’s fans are too old to embrace the digital age does not mean Rihanna’s fans should not embrace every new thing she brings on the table. ”
I bet Lady Gaga’s fanbase isn’t that old and she still managed to sell more albums than Rihtard. The fact is Rihtard doesn’t have a real fanbase. This explains why she still doesn’t have a #1 album. UK saves her ass most of time, because in the other countries, she’s just a single artist.

“If an album brings in coin from Video royalties + singles + radio royalties + album sales, once that all adds up, it looks a lot better than 0 video royalties + flop singles + single airplay + album sales”

        YouTube
        Beyoncé’s 4 era views: +385 million;
Rihtard’s Talk That Flop era views: +354 million.

What did you say??? Beyoncé is getting PAID. Don’t forget that Beyoncé’s videos are very low budget (minus RTW). On other hand, Rihtard’s videos are expensive and full of CGI effects. Hm…

“… radio royalties…” I really didn’t want to bring up this, but do you know that these royalties go to the songwriters, right? And, as far as I know, Rihtard didn’t pen any of her songs. On other hand, Beyoncé was credited on all of hers singles. Don’t forget that her singles were huge on R&B radios (minus RTW).

According to Forbes, Rihtard made less than $55 million during the Loud era (tour + cd sales + single sales). In that same year, Beyoncé made $40 million at home doing nothing. Who’s the boss? They say Rihtard net worth $72 million; Beyoncé, 350 million. Ooops!

I won’t even bring the albums’ numbers because I’ve seen Talk That Flop being sold for less than $4 several times (including three weeks after its release).

  • Samia,

Has Rita Ora given up on her failed music career? She was hosting a club event in Las vegas. These are the sort of things cheesy reality stars do to earn a bit of cash. The funny thing, is on april 30th she was at lavo, with Rib Kardashian ( one of her many name droppers ) she performed ‘ how we do’, but the crowd ( by looks of the pictures ) where not paying attention, to that wrinkle had trying to be young and glowing Rihanna.

Well, she is back in vegas, hosting clubs, with Rob K. Is roc nation running out of ideas on how to FORCE this hag onto the american public? What new singer can you name is hosting parties in Vegas? Is that what a young Rihanna had to do? Did Ashanti even have to do that?

Only fame hungry losers, with no talent host parties in vegas, people like Kim K, Amber Rose, Video hoes, Pauly D, Jersy shore reality TV wives ….and RITA ORA, who will be coming to a reality TV show near you.

The FLOP-Hive are reaching today LMAO, you’re gonna have to deal hahahaha.

  • Sam,

You are reaching. The UK does not do a top 100, so DJ fresh FEAT Rita Ora being in the top 100 means nothing. The UK chart stops at 40 and guess what? RIP is at 36, on its way out….but WHYB – which came out after RIP is still in top 30! SO Rih is out selling Rita Ora on the single charts with a song, she did not promote. Rita ORA and roc nation spent MONEY to promote that average song. That was the only reason – that and Rihanna name, it got to number 1. Let see if How we do can do the same.

    • The UK actually does have a hot 100 – or, more accurately, we have a top 100 singles chart. Look up the Official Chart Company as it is them who compile the UK chart and their website shows the top 100 singles and albums each week (updated midweek as well). Radio 1 may only show the top 40 but the top 100 chart is there if you know where to look ;o)

iF she WAS WHITE, SHE would not generate this much hatred and envy – people, even established singers like Beyonce, wanting to tear her down so stop her thriving would try this. When blonde brtiney was on top, people were rooting for her, even though she cannot sing. Rih has hatred from black blogs, beyonce, Jay z AND That clone the made to try ( but failed ) to destroy her. It must hurt that a West indian has blown an african american with a great voice out the water in her own country. Rihanna has now outsold beyonce.

Do not dare chant Beyonce grammies and accolades etc. That is all very well, but she is not the baddest black chick in the game anymore, Rihanna is!

Right now, Zoe Saldana and Rihanna are the only stylist, hot sexy black women worth having media attention.

GGGB was a huge hit and GLM and MOS went platinum.

Rih is big all overthe world she is headlining a show in Japan and performing at the women world cup in Azerbaijan. Chris brown is even more famous in Europe BECAUSE HE DATED RIH, no one knew he was at first.

Beyoncé’s 4 doesn’t have any commercial appeal at all and yet managed to be the biggest R&B album of 2011. Talk That Flop is full of dance songs and it failed. Ya know if Beyoncé released TTT, it would’ve smashed. On other hands, Rihtard wouldn’t be able to sell a copy of 4. That’s why Rihtard keeps jumping on the bandwagon.

With such a welcoming reception from the public, naturally came a new high of recognition this year from nearly every prestigious outlet in the music industry. The year began with a Grammy win for the lead single off Loud, “Only Girl (In The World)”, in “Best Dance Recording”. Rihanna performed twice that night, her five-time Grammy nominated collaboration, “Love The Way You Lie”, and her upcoming 2012 nomination, “What’s My Name”. The performances were met with rave reviews including Time Magazine calling for the “2011 Grammys be renamed: The Rihanna Show”. (The Grammy committee clearly took notice for the upcoming 2012 ceremony, as the recently revealed nominations include a nod in the highly coveted “Album of The Year” category for Loud.) Following the Grammys, she jetted across the Atlantic to attend the Brit Awards the following day, in which she won “International Female Artist of The Year”. Rihanna took to twitter to express her excitement to her fans: “Came with a Grammy, left with a Brit!!!” In May, we saw Rihanna kicking off the return of the Billboard Music Awards with a performance of her #1 single, “S&M”, with fellow pop star Britney Spears. She was awarded that night with “Female Artist of The Year”, based on statical success on their charts. She followed out the year with a series of wins including People’s Choice (Pop Artist, Song, & Music Video), American Music Awards (R&B Album), BET Awards (Female R&B Artist), and a Soul Train Award.

Being cited by Anna Wintour, herself, as being one of the leading artists in fashion today, Rihanna made her long anticipated debut on the covers of both American and British Vogue. Italia Vogue named her Woman of The Year. Rolling Stone and Esquire Magazine both published their first cover featuring Rihanna and the later elected her “Sexiest Woman of the Year”. Rihanna also made returned visits to the covers of Cosmopolitan and Glamour Magazine.

Further signifying the power of her brand, she was chosen to be the face of multi-million dollar campaigns for giants including Armani, Nivea and Vita Coco. The Barbados Tourism Authority also signed Rihanna to a multi-year contract to exclusively promote her hometown island giving her the title of Tourism Ambassador. Her signature perform was launched earlier in the year to such success, that she already has a sequel scheduled for release in 2012. Rihanna also was cast in a role in Peter Berg’s Battleship, of which she has been featured extensively in promotions for the film releasing in summer 2012.

Last Girl On Earth Tour was still finishing up earlier this year, but that didn’t stop Rihanna from announcing her biggest and most successful tour yet, Loud Tour. The tours consisted of over a hundred arena dates this year, including a record-breaking 10 sold-out London O2 dates due to demand, Rock In Rio headliner, and her first stadium concert in Barbados. The tour, featuring over two dozen of her biggest hits, was acclaimed by critics and applauded by fans. Being a globe-trotting superstar hasn’t side-tracked Rihanna from continuing her efforts in Philanthropy however. In fact, she was honored at DKMS 5th Annual Gala for her tireless work in the fight against Leukemia.

That said, Rihanna still lags behind Beyoncé in terms of albums sales. 4 sold 310,000 copies in its opening week and debuted at Number One on Billboard’s album chart, while Rihanna’s latest, Talk That Talk, opened at Number Three on the chart in November with 197,000 units sold. This gulf is even more pronounced when comparing their previous albums – Beyoncé’s Sasha Fierce has sold nearly twice as many copies as Rihanna’s Loud. (In fairness, Beyoncé’s album has been out for longer, but both records have yielded a number of smash hit songs.)

This difference in purchasing patterns may speak to a generational divide not just between the two singers, but between their fan bases: Rihanna’s younger-skewing audience are accustomed to focusing on individual tracks having grown up on iTunes and file-sharing, while Beyoncé’s older fans are more conditioned to buy full albums. Beyoncé certainly encourages a more album-centric view of her work – all of her solo records have been organized around clearly-defined thematic conceits, and she went out of her way to present 4 as the product of a “year-long personal and artistic journey” in Year of 4, her documentary about the making of the album.

Beyoncé certainly isn’t alone in making old school pop records – Lady Gaga and Adele have both racked up blockbuster sales with their most recent albums, though both singers did so on the strength of radio hits such as “The Edge of Glory” and “Rolling in the Deep.” To her credit, Rihanna has been producing thematically unified albums in her own right – Talk That Talk is a tightly sequenced 37-minute set with an emphasis on racy lyrics, and Loud has been nominated for Album of the Year at the 54th Grammy Awards. This sort of validation may push the singer in the same direction Beyoncé has been headed – having proven herself as a major star, Rihanna may eventually choose to pursue a creative direction that isn’t in line with prevailing radio trends. As much as Rihanna’s success can be read as a shift in the marketplace, it could just be that she just hasn’t opted to use her leverage as a bona fide superstar to take the sort of risks Beyoncé has made in 2011

this is what rolling stone say:

    READ IT AND UNDERSTAND IT.

    • Social Media is another one of Rihanna’s fortes now. She has 47 million fans on the most popular social network, Facebook, becoming the leader of any artist. She has approximately 11 million twitter followers and interacts with them daily on a personal level unmatched by an celebrity of her stature. Rihanna is the most subscribed artist on Youtube with a total of 1.9 billion music video views on her channel (an additional 620 million if you include her official featured videos). On the popular music play-count service Last.Fm, she has the most unique listeners of any female solo artist, with over 3 million. According to Fame Count, she is the fastest growing artist on the web at the moment.

It is through this mountain of success, acclaim, and support that it has become impossible for even Rihanna’s most belligerent of detractors, to ignore that Rihanna, at the age of only 23, has permanently ingrained herself a place in pop culture history. How does Rihanna go about dealing with this level of fame and increasingly high-level of expectation? She was quoted in Vogue, “When something feels real, you don’t have to make any apologies for it. When it feels good to you nothing else matters. Everything else is just noise.”

  • “Rihanna is not a local bitch” should be my motto. So because the US has the biggest music market it’s the only one that matters? Girl bye. I couldn’t care less about local country sales, especially when it comes to Internationalhanna. TTT has sold 2.8million copies world wide with only one major world wide hit (Where Have You Been was not as big as WFL and not big enough to sell the album). No hate, no shade, but Talk That Talk has outperformed 4 world wide commercially. So the Hive needs to have a seat with their hate. TTT didn’t slay ebut based off the numbers it slayed 4. Beyonce and Rihanna have nothing in common except they both personally know Jay Z. Stop comparing them

With a hit like WFL for a 1st single, it shouldnt have taken 9 months for TTT to outsell 4. You should be ashamed to compare a pregnant woman’s era with one that is hale, hearty & touring the world constantly ….. Even when she’s not actuallly on tour.

    Rihanna did that!

I like “Talk That Talk” better than “Loud” actually.

  • Umm, Hot Right Now is actually DJ Fresh’s song, not Rita Ora’s – she was only doing a feature so I personally don’t count it as HER hit. Can you please try to post about Rihanna without mentioning Rita fucking Ora for once, its getting really fucking boring now ;o)
