Is Beyonce A Feminist? ‘MSNBC’s Mellisa Harris-Perry Weighs In

Published: Sunday 15th Dec 2013 by David

One or the other.

When it comes to acknowledging one’s sexuality and embracing one’s power, women are oft encouraged to choose one or the other- a choice rooted in the idea that an empowered woman must be an asexual one.

An idea, that believes a woman’s sexuality is only ever relevant when used to attract and appease men, rendering any woman who dares to embrace her desire for male ‘company’ weak…docile…’a whore.’

So, it should come as no surprise that Pop superstar Beyonce finds herself on the receiving end of such criticism today, following the unveiling of her brand new visual album, jam packed with a collection of steamy videos that’s set some pulses racing and many a tongue wagging this week.

Now,  watch MSNBC‘s Melissa Harris-Perry share her thoughts on the matter below- weighing in on what she calls Beyonce‘s ‘feminist manifesto.’

Yes, and the best feminist ever.

  7. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

  8. C squad above you all December 15, 2013

Beyonce needs to be thanking Ciara for the inspiration.

  9. yek December 15, 2013

Onika, there’s absolutely nothing to listen there. most lyrics are depraved, even when her backup singer is speakin in french. i illegally downloaded that album ’cause of the hype n curiosity, i give it a 3.5/10

  10. SLAYRIAH CAREY (TOUR DE FORCE) December 15, 2013

    Ever heard if multi-tasking?

  11. ENOUGH ONIKA (NEW & IMPROVED) December 15, 2013

Not here for copy cats she stole ciara whole image with these videos.

  13. Lovebird (LOUDER – 04.03.14) December 15, 2013

Then Miley, Gaga and Rihanna are feminists.

They did bring about a good point though, women are made to be competitors rather than pioneers.

  14. Lovebird (LOUDER – 04.03.14) December 15, 2013

Oh, Nicki Minaj is a feminist too.

  15. glamour December 15, 2013

beyonce has no self respect and is desperate for attention, she’s more like a trashy narcissistic than a feminist

  16. ENOUGH ONIKA (NEW & IMPROVED) December 15, 2013

@Lovebird shut up. Damn your a hypocrite. “That Rihanna reign” is what she and her navy chant anytime she gets some crazy accolade. She said in MULTIPLE interviews she doesn’t like to see other female artists doing better than her, it bothers her.

  17. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

The first to comment on a beyonce post? LOL

  18. whocares December 15, 2013

Lol the album has nothing memorable. Only that it crept into the night unannounced. It is selling only on her name. I bought the album within the first hour it came out on itunes and I wish I would have waited to hear the leaks because I would not have invested in this trash. In that case all the other h*** in the industry should be called feminist since beyonce did exactly what they did. Its just its beyonce so they it seem like she is the innovator. This album worse than 4. And itunes don’t do refunds

  19. My Forehead Tho December 15, 2013

    “Is Beyonce a feminist?”

    Simply, yes.

*Waits for people to try to explain how she isn’t one only to further prove how much she is one in the process*

  20. Drea •pretty hurts• December 15, 2013

Look at the first losers to comment. Pathetic. This week has been christened BeyWeek! Don’t like it, join the Mariah forum. Welp, I’m sure they’re also talking about the queen. Mariah doesn’t have anything exciting going on.

Yes Bey is a feminist. She isn’t ashamed of her sexuality. She’s liberated. Shes a GROWN ASS WOMAN. You turds are so pressed…

  21. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

@Glamour B**** please. I have said this a million times and I will say it again:LISTEN TO FLAWLESS,AND TRY TO DIGEST CHIMAMANDA’S SPEECH. Better yet,go on the rap genius blog and look up the lyrics. They explain each lyric slowly and effectively. Clearly you and these stupid “feminists” need to see it

  22. Lovebird (LOUDER – 04.03.14) December 15, 2013

“@Lovebird shut up. Damn your a hypocrite.”

    ???????

Looks at comment, “*sits back and watches the haters seethe while listening to Beyonce album*”

    Looks at username, ENOUGH ONIKA

Looks at entire history of anti-Nick Minaj unsolicited hatred.

    *Files nails*

  23. Naomi December 15, 2013

No she is not she just likes making women feel good. Difference. Modern day feminists are not always dressed as nuns though. Feminism is about female liberation.

  24. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

    @DREA School these h***

  25. XXX December 15, 2013

DEATH @ the Mariah Carey fan being the first in here.
Beyonce distracting you from studying girl?

  26. Lovebird (LOUDER – 04.03.14) December 15, 2013

“Yes Bey is a feminist. She isn’t ashamed of her sexuality. She’s liberated. Shes a GROWN ASS WOMAN. You turds are so pressed…”

Is this the same fanbase who calls Rihanna a “pornstar with a mic”?? How the tone changes, I CAN’T.

  27. Drea •pretty hurts• December 15, 2013

Rihanna hasn’t said s*** since Beyonce dropped this bomb. Step your cookies up before the crumble Robyn. 🙂

  28. Drea •pretty hurts• December 15, 2013

Rihanna IS a p*** star with a mic. She’s beyond sexual. She’s trashy, repulsive and degrading. Her little $1.29 singles are cute though.

  29. Lovebird (LOUDER – 04.03.14) December 15, 2013

“Rihanna IS a p*** star with a mic. She’s beyond sexual. She’s trashy, repulsive and degrading. Her little $1.29 singles are cute though.”

And Beyonce is a pornstar with a mic who is a mother and married woman.

  30. Jesso December 15, 2013

That Rocket video turned me the f*** on>>>>>>

  31. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

@xxx lmao sis I asked the same thing. Her obsession is getting a little scary

  32. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

@Lovebird Alicia Keys is a homewrecker. She’s no better

  33. zania December 15, 2013

Her WORST album ever, yet people acting as if it was IASF part 2. @ best this album will peak @ 2million in US and 4mil WW. let’s be honest this is prolly the worst female album of the year 2nd to Bangerz. this album might be sellin fast but has no longevity. she has 2 or 3 catchy beats n thats it…cant wait to see her perform half naked to try to push those forgetable singles

  34. Navy Commander December 15, 2013

Not when she’s telling other women to bow down and this her sh*t. Try again.

  35. Jesso December 15, 2013

@Alicia ‘Home wrecking’ Keys is a pretty bad example.

  36. XXX December 15, 2013

@Zania is that why its currently perched at 85 on metacritic?

  37. Lovebird (LOUDER – 04.03.14) December 15, 2013

“@Lovebird Alicia Keys is a homewrecker. She’s no better”

She can still set an example for her children that love conquers all, and not put it into their head that you need to take your clothes off to sell albums.

  38. BEY Serious December 15, 2013

    You missed the point

  39. Lovebird (LOUDER – 04.03.14) December 15, 2013

“cant wait to see her perform half naked to try to push those forgetable singles”

I think the album is fantastic but this made me laugh.

  40. XXX December 15, 2013

Anyway feminist is a strong word to me, Beyonce likes to encourage women to be confident, s*** and in control of themselves but I would not call her a feminist.

  41. Drea •pretty hurts• December 15, 2013

Hatebird is such a r*****. Continue to stan for brain dead bimbos and singles artists. We (Hive) are good over here boo boo.

  42. SLAYRIAH CAREY (TOUR DE FORCE) December 15, 2013

Why would I let Beyonce distract me from studying?? I was simply multi-tasking. My study habits are different.

    @BEYHIVE_GARBAJ

But you and the others were talking about me on that Bey/Elijah post and wishing death on me before I even woke up so I’m not the one who is obsessed honey.

  43. Jesso December 15, 2013

B**** please! Home wrecking love? Beyonce’s work is her work. She has not done anything different to Madonna, Christina, J Lo and other s*** moms.

  44. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

@Lovebird at least she got blue ivy from her own man,the same she has been with for 12 years. She is a good mother to blue ivy and will raise her well. She can also teach her on why it is important to be faithful and not go sleeping around with other women’s husbands

  45. XXX December 15, 2013

There’s a Mariah post above now SHOO you pest.

  46. Lovebird (LOUDER – 04.03.14) December 15, 2013

“She has not done anything different to Madonna, Christina, J Lo and other s*** moms.”

They didn’t rub hands with Michelle Obama and sing for the president.

They didn’t market themselves as pioneers of female empowerment and respect.

They didn’t market themselves as an infallible demi-gods who are the standard of class and grace.

  47. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

You were the FIRST to comment, shortly after you had gone off to “study”. I’m waiting for and explanation darling

  48. Navy Commander December 15, 2013

Rihanna does have to say sh*t. She’s waiting I unleash the monster.9 she has nothing to worry about.

  49. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

    *an

  50. Jesso December 15, 2013

@Lovebird they have all rubbed hands with Michelle Obama, Christina even dragged the current pop girls for being s*** to sell yet she forgot about Dirrty days, and Beyonce has never marketed herself as a demi God. Try again.

  51. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

@Navy commander beyonce clearly said Bow down b******,not women. B******,as in HATERS. The ones who have been downing her for years. Learn to comprehend sweetheart

  52. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

@Lovebird you stan for Xtina who seems to think we forgot about Dirrty and Not myself tonight

  53. mark jones December 15, 2013

People talking about that flawless song but young girls don’t need to hear that. You saying bow down b**** but then try and counter it with spoken word about accepting ones sexual prowess . A walking contradiction in my opinion if your a feminist educate these young girls and show them they don’t have to take off there clothes, drink, or shame your ass to gain respect from anyone. Teach them that they are Q.U.E.E.N.s and not sexual beings or egotistical. So have several seats with this. Thank you!

  54. Drea •pretty hurts• December 15, 2013

There’s a new Mariah post. Carry your pressed asses over there. It probably won’t even reach 50 comments unless Beyonces holy name is brought up. #NoOneCaresAboutHa

  55. Drea •pretty hurts• December 15, 2013

Beyhive don’t forget about “Your Body”. Who am I kidding? Everyone forgot about that song & video in which she looked an overweight stank mess.

  56. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

@Mark Jones take your pressed ass to rapgenius.com and look up the flawless lyrics. They explain everything for the slow ones like you. You’re welcome

  57. SLAYRIAH CAREY (TOUR DE FORCE) December 15, 2013

Why is this creature so pressed about me studying? At least I’m studying, can’t say the same about Beyonce (girl who can’t construct a sentence) knowles. & I already explained even though I don’t have to .

  58. Navy Commander December 15, 2013

Cause you were there when her ghostwriter wrote the song right? The reaching! A feminist doesn’t just wish good on those who like her a feminist wants better for all the women of the world, rather they be b*tches or not.

  59. *ℙᏫℙ ℝᏫᎩAℒᎿᎩ* December 15, 2013

Now Let’s Get back to Topic you Guys above!

What Is meant by “Feminism” To Each one of you all ?

And Is it all about The S** part ?

@ Me in Replies and Please Stick to The Topic.

  60. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

There is a Mariah post above. Now go away peasant

  61. Hivy December 15, 2013

I’m not even gonna drag the fools always perched in Beyoncé’s post. As for slayriah she likes messing with the hive cause she knows she can get some of us riled up even me but I’m just gonna ignore her.

  62. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

@Navy Commander no,I wasn’t there when the dream wrote the song, and I don’t know why she accepted it. OH WAIT! I do! She explained the whole “bow down” concept perfectly on iTunes Radio. You may want to look at it before you rush to a conclusion

  63. Hivy December 15, 2013

@Pop royalty “S**-positive feminists, however, argue that sexual freedom is an essential component of women’s freedom.” In beyonce’s case.

In case people didn’t they are different type of feminist.

  64. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

@Hivy we know what she does. I don’t blame you for ignoring her,I just want to annoy her to get on her nerves

  65. SLAYRIAH CAREY (TOUR DE FORCE) December 15, 2013

K so I’ve come to realize that the Beyonce Stans have some type of obsession for me… Lol.

Anyway, can we get a Rihanna or Gaga update?? Tired of seeing this struggling bitchh

  66. Hivy December 15, 2013

    Got this one from wiki.

“For feminists, a woman’s right to control her own sexuality is a key issue. Feminists such as Catharine MacKinnon argue that women have very little control over their own bodies, with female sexuality being largely controlled and defined by men in patriarchal societies”

  67. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

@pop royalty in all honesty, some of these women are so quick to take out the feminist card to use it to bring down women who are flaunting their s** appeal

  68. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

I told you there is a Mariah post above. Can’t you read? If you don’t like any of the beyonce posts,go to the Mariah post and stay there or log out and go listen to the art of letting go over and over while waiting for that album

  69. *ℙᏫℙ ℝᏫᎩAℒᎿᎩ* December 15, 2013

B**** says someone is distracting Him from studying YET YET YET he has the most comments in this post, a post of someone he supposedly hates and He isn’t in his fav’s Post.

Bonus Japanese Track: He is also waiting for the next post, all WHILE studying and He wants No Distraction!!!!!

    🙄

b**** WTF are you studying ? Comments in TGJ?!
    😀 😆

  70. Hivy December 15, 2013

I think some fools on here thinking that feminism means one cannot be sexual. LMAO

  71. FAF December 15, 2013

I don’t think Beyonce is a feminist, personally because she exhibits childlike behavior before Jayz and praises him and calls him “daddy” thats not a feminist thing not to mention in her “life is but a dream” special she gave him the thanks for basically making her, saying “I can’t do anything without you” thats not feminist speech

  72. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

@Hivy THISSS!!! And I will support that comment with this statement from Chimamanda’s speech:”We teach girls they cannot be sexual beings in the way that boys are”

  73. Jessie December 15, 2013

I see confident women being sexual equating more to feminism than the woman who feels the need to always be demure and cover up to preserve her image. And if you listen to Beyonce’s lyrics, the sexual references are mainly about what she wants the man to do to her, not vice versa. Men always have the authority to be sexual and talk about the girl, people who supress girls for doing it may as well be anti-feminism.

  74. Jessie December 15, 2013

Feminism isn’t all based on s** anyway. And there are different levels of feminism to me. Its not that black and white.

  75. mekaela December 15, 2013

So beyonce skining out her p**** and doing what miley and rihanna do is called a f****** pioneer oh please she is copying what rihanna does best and s** appeal and miley so dont call the thief a feminist because ri and miley are grown ass women too who are expressing their sexuality and been criticize now here goes this fat a** pouncing around is look at as changing the game gtfoh

  76. *ℙᏫℙ ℝᏫᎩAℒᎿᎩ* December 15, 2013

    @Hivy and @BeyhiveMinaj :

so what you Guys think of “P*** Stars” for example, do you think they are “feminists” ?

There is so much confusion when it comes to this one.

I think Feminism is to have control when to show skin, have s**,etc.. all by your own without having someone to control Your way of doing it, whether was society or anything else, am i on the right track ?

  77. SLAYRIAH CAREY (TOUR DE FORCE) December 15, 2013

Okay so it appears that the pharmacist lacks reading and comprehension skills. When did I say Beyonce was distracting me from studying???

& lol I don’t hate Beyonce. I hate no one.

Not that it’s any of your business, but I have exams to study for.

  78. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

@Faf so acknowledging/appreciating your husband is not feminist like? Smh simpletons

  79. *ℙᏫℙ ℝᏫᎩAℒᎿᎩ* December 15, 2013

Humans, By Nature, are sexual Beings, That “asexual” talk is Abnormal to me.

    ➡ and GOODBye.

  80. Hivy December 15, 2013

@Jessie If you haven’t watched the videos like “Partition” You can see that Beyoncé IS the one pleasing her husband and that means she is controlling her sexuality the way she wants. SO if she tells jay z to f*** her from the back then he can do it because she gave her permission. Anyone can see that Jay z can’t control beyonce.

  81. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

@Mekeala we are trying to have a diplomatic discussion here with proper grammar. If you won’t co-operate,kindly leave

  82. Skyfall December 15, 2013

    Beyonce is everything right now

  83. Drea •pretty hurts• December 15, 2013

Slayriah please. What kind of studying are you doing boo boo? You need to focus on more important things like your education. Bey has her millions babe. Get ready for those “exams” and unpress yourself.

  84. Livvy December 15, 2013

When I listen to Beyonce in this album, Im like yes girl you are a lil freak. I can relate to her in this album because all the sexual references are about her man.

That’s why this is Beyonce’s most personal album trust she would not be doing this if she was still under Matty. She has been set free to express herself!

  85. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

@pop royalty no,p*** isn’t the same. That’s why we are ok with people trashing Kim kardashian. Beyonce on the other hand,is just showing off and flaunting her sexuality for her husband. Nothing is wrong with that

  86. mekaela December 15, 2013

The behive need to start a petition for beyonce to learn to read write and speak proper English stop coming for rihanna and the other popstars no one is bowing down to this woman she is not the messiah

  87. Drea •pretty hurts• December 15, 2013

This album is all about Beyonce becoming comfortable in her skin, loving her husband, making women feel good and loving her child. Beyonce has come full circle as a woman and this album represents that. She’s a feminist in the sense of being in control of herself and breaking barriers & double standards.

  88. Hivy December 15, 2013

@Pop Pornstars are hard to differentiate but if you look at it they are basically selling their bodies and it also depends on the level of control a pornstar has over their own body. Pornstars aren’t really any different from Prostitutes so I would say they are not feminist.

  89. SLAYRIAH CAREY (TOUR DE FORCE) December 15, 2013

Actually, I would consider the Kardashians to be feminists over Beyonce

  90. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

At least we can spell the word “beyhive”

  91. Drea •pretty hurts• December 15, 2013

Mekaela youre one to talk about proper English. Girl no one is worried about Rihanna but you, now scram. You are not wanted here.

  92. Hivy December 15, 2013

    @Drea I agree with everything.

  93. *ℙᏫℙ ℝᏫᎩAℒᎿᎩ* December 15, 2013

    @FAF:

“Feminism” Includes Being a Woman, A Girl Won’t feel like a complete Woman, Whether anyone gonna like it or not, Till She get Married and Be a mother, This is the Time she feel Her womanhood The most, Womanhood is an Essential part of being a female.

So her being thankful to her husband, who made her His wife is a part of the process IMO.

Or Female Supporters of the “Feminism” movement Should be Single Forever Because marriage is Anti-feminism ?

  94. mekaela December 15, 2013

The behive criticize ri and miley and look at beyonce selling s** whining and gyrating her p**** in her video and they have the nerve to put other popstars down for what a grown mother at 32 selling p**** in her videos hypocrits

  95. Bey Fan December 15, 2013

I think the point of the “feminist” movement was to empower woman and let them know that they can make whatever decision they want to. Expressing their sexuality shouldn’t be taboo.

Woman shouldn’t be held to a different standard then men. D’Angelo did whole video where he appeared to be b*** naked, and women were loving it. It became an iconic moment for him. It was viewed as s***, not trashy. He wasn’t called a s*** or w****.

Now as far as Rihanna… I think it was more so the Ashton Kucher, ASAP, Drake, Chris, and others in the business giving the impression that she slept around. Quite frankly, her personal life is her personal life. I dont like her live performances or her live vocals most of the time. Thats the only issue I have with Rihanna. Never once have I called her out her name.

  96. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

Basically, beyonce is sending the message that it’s ok to be naughty for your man anytime you like. Like she said,”I just wanna show you how much I appreciate you” She makes females feel good and s*** about themselves. That’s female empowerment

  97. *ℙᏫℙ ℝᏫᎩAℒᎿᎩ* December 15, 2013

    @HIVY:

I agree, “p*** Stars” are not Feminists Despite them having some control Over their Bodies and sexuality.

  98. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

@Bey fan I agree with every sentence

  99. Hivy December 15, 2013

Also it’s not only about having control over your own sexuality or body but also having respect for it.

  100. Drea •pretty hurts• December 15, 2013

The Beyonce album made my MAN very happy this weekend. 🙂 lol.

  101. Drea •pretty hurts• December 15, 2013

    Yes Beyfan preach boo boo.

  102. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

The thing is that in the present day, feminism has been watered down to make people believe women have to be clean at all times, that they should keep their curves to themselves, that they should be satisfied with what society tells as we should be content with. We have gone back to the same cause that caused the uprise of feminism. Women have been thrown back to the 19th century, now coated as “feminism”

  103. Hivy December 15, 2013

And they said the “Hive” is ghetto and stupid like our fave. LOL Love ur pic @pop Iconna

  104. *ℙᏫℙ ℝᏫᎩAℒᎿᎩ* December 15, 2013

    @Beyhive_Minaj :

Many people Beside jay Z saw beyonce’s Body parts, so she’s not sharing it only with him, sorry.

Her Image has a lot to do with S**, she marketed herself like that, her Image is to Please MEN Who Watch her, so Theoretically she is not a feminist.

Kim kardashian showed everything there to be seen, I see That degrading to women and i don’t consider it feminism.

  105. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

@Hivy thank you! That’s why you have never seen bey sleeping around with every tom,d*** and Harry

  106. *ℙᏫℙ ℝᏫᎩAℒᎿᎩ* December 15, 2013

    @Beyhive_Minaj :

I get You, But Female Empowerment is more than Feeling S***/Good about yourself I think.

  107. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

@Pop royalty I understand that. But then again, she doesn’t have a reputation as a w****. Yes,men lust for her. But she carries herself as a woman of class, and that is why she has earned the respect of men,and look at her more than an object of sexual pleasure. You know you are a true lady when more men want to WIFE you than to just have s** with you. I remember a track kendrick Lamar released titled beyonce- it basically proves my point

  108. Hivy December 15, 2013

I kinda DO agree with @POP that many people probably saw Beyoncé’s body BUT I believe she gave them permission to look at her sans its for photoshoots and the like but It’s what you do with your body that matters.

  109. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

@pop royalty a feminist is someone who believes in equal rights of both sexes in politics, education, physical ability, talent and sexuality. So you are completely right

  110. Hivy December 15, 2013

Ofcourse its not only about feeling good/s*** about yourself, it has way more to do with that but that is what beyonce having been displaying to fans/stans and how women she be more independent( see Madonna.) and stop letting others control their lives. (See. Pretty Hurts video)

  111. *ℙᏫℙ ℝᏫᎩAℒᎿᎩ* December 15, 2013

    @Beyfan :

Keep Rihanna out of it… and stick to the topic. we don’t discuss “sexuality”, we discuss “Feminism”.

Also It depends on the images what you gonna be viewed as, it can range from “Hot”, “seductive”, “s***” and of course “trashy” if it is over the top and degrading in a Humiliating type of way.

    Now Back to topic…

  112. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

@Hivy exactly- idk why hey ignore pretty hurts. She is encouraging women to feel beautiful and be proud of who they are. She tells us that imperfection is OK. Why do people always overlook that?

  113. Lovebird (LOUDER – 04.03.14) December 15, 2013

Feminism is fighting for the right of women to stand on equal footing with men in society.

For example, a woman doing the same and equal job as a man should be able to draw the same salary as a man (which is still an issue in the USA).

Oprah Winfrey, who started her own network is a feminist, Hilary Clinton who is subjected and taken part in the arena of politics in the USA is a feminist.

Taking your clothes off is not feminism. That’s my opinion of it anyway.

  114. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

    *they

  115. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

@Lovebird but beyonce is a firm believer in women’s rights, and her achievements alone prove that women have just as much boss mentality as men

  116. Hivy December 15, 2013

@Lovebird You are right but feminism doesn’t end there. See earlier comments.

  117. Hivy December 15, 2013

We can even watch “Jealous” video. It speaks volumes.

  118. *ℙᏫℙ ℝᏫᎩAℒᎿᎩ* December 15, 2013

    @HIVY :

P*** Stars can also Give The Same Permission Beyonce gave Some People might say, so what is there to do to prove those People wrong ?

I’m discussing the topic with every type of question to be asked.

  119. Lovebird (LOUDER – 04.03.14) December 15, 2013

    I like the jealous video.

  120. BEYHIVE_MINAJ December 15, 2013

I need to go,I have to complete this assignment. Glad I could participate in this conversation. I don’t get why people say that the hive can’t hold a conversation without starting a Stan war. Glad we could have a diplomatic debate. Keep it going the way it is and don’t feed in to the trolls. See y’all tomorrow

  121. *ℙᏫℙ ℝᏫᎩAℒᎿᎩ* December 15, 2013

    @Beyhive_Minaj:

To be a feminist is to not be Here all the time for societal opinions about YOU, Because Society is Men-dominated if you we are going to be honest, so them choosing to Wife Someone is not “IT”, Also Some men Prefer Hos as Wives, right ?

  122. *ℙᏫℙ ℝᏫᎩAℒᎿᎩ* December 15, 2013

    i’m 70% agree with @lovebird.

But By “Taking off your clothes” you mean ? in what way it is not feminism ?

  123. Lovebird (LOUDER – 04.03.14) December 15, 2013

“But By “Taking off your clothes” you mean ? in what way it is not feminism ?”

It is a cheat IMO, if Bruno Mars or Justin Timberlake took their clothes off, they wouldn’t achieve the same media hype as Miley, Rihanna or Beyonce.

I equate it to the employee who sleeps with the male boss to get a promotion.

So in a way, women are using their known sexuality to achieve a certain outcome, how is that standing on fair and equal footing?

  124. *ℙᏫℙ ℝᏫᎩAℒᎿᎩ* December 15, 2013

    @Beyhive_Minaj :

Beyonce is The same one who did “pretty hurts” to uplift your self esteem then she Put you down to a “b****” level in ‘Bow down b******” some Might say……

So I’m Kind of Confused and Don’t know what is her real message, she is trying to please everyone?

  125. Lovebird (LOUDER – 04.03.14) December 15, 2013

    That was @Pop Royalty btw

  126. *ℙᏫℙ ℝᏫᎩAℒᎿᎩ* December 15, 2013

    @Beyhive_Minaj:

Goodbye 😀 ,Was Cool having it with you.

  127. Hivy December 15, 2013

P*** Stars can also Give The Same Permission Beyonce gave Some People might say, so what is there to do to prove those People wrong ?

@Pop As for as I know P*** Stars have contracts indicating how much say they have. Beyonce contract is mainly about music(to my knowledge) so what she does with herself is entirely up to her and her control.” Feminists such as Catharine MacKinnon argue that women have very little control over their own bodies, with female sexuality being largely controlled and defined by men in patriarchal societies.” Just using this as an example but as for as I know Beyoncé has full control over her body.

However, I can see why people would think she isn’t a feminist because she does things that are contradictory excluding bow down because she gave her reasoning for the song and the video proves it.

  128. Hivy December 15, 2013

    For @Pop
“The reason I put out ‘Bow Down’ is because I woke up, I went into the studio, I had a chant in my head, it was aggressive, it was angry!” Beyonce admitted. “It wasn’t the Beyoncé that wakes up every morning. It was the Beyoncé that was angry. It was the Beyoncé that felt the need to defend herself! … I listened to it after I finished and said, ‘This is hot! I’ma put it out!’ I’m not going to sell it, I’m just going to put it out!’” She added, “People like it? Great, they don’t? They don’t. And I won’t do it every day because that’s not who I am. But I feel strong, and anyone who says it’s disrespectful — just imagine the person that hates you, just imagine the person that doesn’t believe in you and look in the Mirror in say ‘Bow down b****!’” she laughed. “And I guarantee you feel gangsta, so listen to that song from that point of view if you didn’t like it before.”

Also it’s not only about having control over your own sexuality or body but also having respect for it.

  132. SHAWTY December 15, 2013

    BEYONSLAYYYYYYY !!!

  133. *ℙᏫℙ ℝᏫᎩAℒᎿᎩ* December 15, 2013

    @HIVY

The Term” B******” is Degrading To women, I know from where she’s coming from Since I KNOW she’s one of the most hated women on the internet, Just like rihanna,But she could have used more Proper, classier way of defending herself instead of using the term “B******” which is often used by Men to Degrade Women.
    You Get Me ?
She Could have said ‘Bow down haters’ for examples or any Term for that matter, but The B word is Never of feminism and feminists don’t bring down Women who they fight for.

I know This Song was a way for her to cope with the constant hate she gets, I do Understand, But hmmm, no…. That was not so feminist of her.

    This Is my Opinion Btw.

  134. J.E December 15, 2013

Well Christina at her early career sang for the president. Had a several songs for women empowerment.

  135. Navy Commander December 15, 2013

Exactly. The song didn’t make me think “YEAH ALL MY HATERS SHOULD BOW DOWN!” It made me think “oh Beyonce calling chicks b****** now ok”

  136. Vee December 15, 2013

As a fan, I knew she was referring to haters, not just women.

  137. Hivy December 15, 2013

@POP Well I think she used the song like is because it commands attention and it will catch listeners like yourself. Even so if she had used it a different way people would have still hated her.

  138. ENOUGH ONIKA (NEW & IMPROVED) December 15, 2013

@Lovebird NOW you wanna jump ship again and attack Beyonce again psh. F*ckin trolls on here. And is that your so called way of “proving a point??” Copy and pasting others comments in bold making it seems like you addressing something and not saying anything at all?? LOL. How did that address me calling you a hypocrite (the truth) or that you navy stans chant bullish*t all day and for the past few years while Beyonce lived her life?? *waits for dummy to copy and paste this for dramatic effects* –__–

  139. ENOUGH ONIKA (NEW & IMPROVED) December 15, 2013

And because she had sexual songs/videos that expressed her love WITH HER HUSBAND, she’s not a feminist? SHE CHOSE to release the videos for YOU TO SEE. SHE CHOSE to record those songs. Feminism is about making your own choices WITHOUT boundaries regardless of gender. If she wants to be Martha Smith and not show her body and be in a business suit all day, she has every RIGHT to as well. Either way she empowers woman to make choices freely. Now Rihanna CLEARLY is n*** all the time for attention (see Rihanna instagram). When Beyonce does it’s to make a statement. See S&M vs Partition….

  140. ariana December 15, 2013

Beyonce , congratulations you have done it again. Girl make that money and work, work, work until you can’t work no more. Have it all, take over the world if your heart desires. Bey you can win every category at the every music awards show including country. Good Luck:)

  141. Dray December 15, 2013

I could never understand the problem with this. She is a YOUNG, single woman. .why not date as many guys as she wants? Men do it and no one mums a word. Rihanna doesn’t have loose lips so no one can really say what she does.

  142. Dray December 15, 2013

    truth

  143. Rosie December 15, 2013

Agree with everything Enough Onika said.
Also the “face of feminism” is currently Lena Durham. Lena constantly makes offensive jokes, hypocritical statements, and puts no effort into trying to reach out to any other feminist group but her very own hypocritical, Girls-watching, Jezebel-reading white feminists and is called a feminist icon. Meanwhile Bey is comfortable with her sexuality, tries to empower women BUT shakes her ass a little bit and that same group decides to “ban” Beyoncé from their movement and write 8 million articles on Thought Catalog/some other blog site about why she can’t be feminist.
I don’t know about you but I’d much rather have Beyoncé representing the modern feminist movement than Lena.

  144. Dray December 15, 2013

@Onika what’s wrong with S&M? Rihanna has never denied the fact that she lives the lifetsyle–hnece the variety of collars. .what’s insulting is when people use the BDSM lifestyle as a marketing ploy. . now that’s tacky and insulting. So S&M was just as much a statement as Partition

  145. ENOUGH ONIKA (NEW & IMPROVED) December 15, 2013

@Rosie totally agree. Lena is a f*ckin joke.

@Dray I’d agree with you if Rihanna didn’t say in countless interviews that she ISN’T comfortable taking her clothes off all the time and has to block it out and get into a CHARACTER. See Oprah and Ellen interview(s) for a refresher. Beyonce’s not uncomfortable BECAUSE IT’S HER CHOICE and is comfortable expressing her sexuality for the one she loves and shares her life with. Her motives aren’t to “shock” for attention with her sexual songs/videos..

  146. Bondsmen December 15, 2013

There ain’t nothing s*** about Miley’s music lol and a Rihanna is definitely does and she promotes weed but I think bey is one and should be a compliment and it’s just an opinion. Why when people give a opinion it’s considered hate but i guess if it was actually a fact the Bey-Hive would still be mad.. Y’all stupid and blind when it comes to Beyoncè Miley promotes drugs use and stupidity and Ciara tries to promote floppable music and s** and dance and Keri Hilson lol and Kelly Rowkand promotes s** and laziness what else is new??!! The majority of the pop/R&B crossovers promote s** and thats the truth especially the female gender

  147. MC!!! December 15, 2013

if beyonce thinks she’s a feminist then okay whatever by her terms she is. I think every woman is somewhat a feminist because we all want equality. my definition of a full on feminist is someone who really fights for women’s rights while still respecting men and their roles in society. My thing is I never see beyonce do anything for women rights outside of music or entertainment. Just because she has a respected feminist preaching on a track don’t make her a full blown feminist. But like I said if she think she’s one then ok. I don’t get why everyone is having a field day over it. * plays Mj they don’t really care about us*

  148. UniversalChic December 15, 2013

Some of you are really grasping for this straw because it’s the only thing you have left and sorry you don’t even have this one in the bag.

Since her first single on the radio in 1997 no,no,no this chick has been pushing feminism through her music. Look at the lyrics who is in control?

    Verse 2 Beyonce
If you keep actin’ this way
    You’re gonna lose my love
I ain’t got no time to play
You better to be playin hurry up
Cause every time I come around
    Cruse around your way
I see you on the corner
But you don’t know what to say
When I walk up to you baby
    You seem so shy
    What’s the problem baby
Never had a girl like I
I can see right through you
And you know you wanna be mine
    So get your act together
Cause you’re running out of time

From Bills,Bills,Bills, to Bootylicious, Independent woman,Bug-A-Boo,Survivor all the way up into her solo career with Me,Myself and I to Irreplaceable, Single Ladies, Run the world, Diva and the list goes on. Her ENTIRE catalog of music is full of nothing but women empowering anthems. She has donated to and funded NUMEROUS programs to women to develop employment and education for them. From Phoenix house where she donated her entire salary from Cadillac records that helps women with past addictions or who have been abused get their cosmetology license to her work with Women’s Fund For Scotland that raises money from individuals and organisations for grants to local charities working with and for women, to Candies foundation an organization that helps to educated young women on s** and t*** pregnancy. She also has done work with an organization in haiti that helps provide education and employment to young women. She has put her money where her mouth is so EDUCATE yourself on this women’s work before you speak on it.

As for her showing her sexuality not only has she been embracing it her ENTIRE career ( I mean Naughty Girl,Baby Boy, Kitty Kat like GTFO acting like she has never been sexual in her music and image when not to long ago you where all making comments about all she does is booty shake and swing weave) but she has always talked about the women’s body and how it’s beautiful. Why is it men can flaunt their goodies but women can’t? She is in control of her ART of her BODY and of HER sexuality and she is NOT afraid to show it which is why she did NOT hold it back. She is very much so a feminist b*** a$$ naked and all her MUSIC proves that, her CHARITY work proves that and her POWER as a business women in the industry proves that.

  149. UniversalChic December 15, 2013

Also as for bow down and the term “b****” being used. JUST because society and the hip hop world has turned and twisted that word to define a woman does not mean that it does. A B**** is a female dog and it can be used to insult a MAN or a WOMAN. She was talking to any and about everybody who fit into the mold of being a hater but as per usual people take anything this chick does or says and twist it to fit into heir agenda. Keep winning B.

  150. MC!!! December 15, 2013

beyonce didnt even write no no no

  151. UniversalChic December 15, 2013

@MC Is that the only thing you could try and come for out of my whole point? LMAO …. her not writing it doesn’t change the fact that through THEIR voices the message was spread and through OUT her career through her VOICE and image and MONEY she has praised women and stood for their rights. #Swerve

  152. xedos December 16, 2013

Beyonce is not a feminist she an opportunist. all these years she sold the perfect image. it works all the way until her last album. she dominate her female counter parts until Rihanna shows up . Rihanna became the anti Beyonce women sexuality in music was back. rihanna use social media to make sure of that. i remember when beyonce said she would not be on twitter she’s a private person. her last album did not do as expected.
This time she posting all type of pic on social media. lyrics and visual change from gold teeth to to sexual charged lyrics. she did not change because she wanted to. she was force to. Rihanna is the feminists beyonce is the opportunist. Rihanna never waver from who she is. she embraced her sexuality from day one even when she was call w**** by the beehive. give Rihanna this same album and videos and the beehive would be the 1st to call her a w****. no women in the music business right now is more confident and comfortable with their sexuality like rihanna. beyonce do what it takes to make money and stay in the public eye. sexualy charge image is what it takes now to get attention. Miley study rihanna and beyonce is doing the Rihanna light.

  153. Marcel December 16, 2013

I don’t think Beyonce is a feminist I just think she believes in equal pay and equal rights for women around the world.

Check out “Dare” by new artist Marcel
    http://youtu.be/UjNYIt2znVo

  154. Dray December 16, 2013

@Onika. .you are getting Rihanna mixed up with Beyonce; in interviews that I’ve seen of my fav, she says she;s very comfortable with nudity. So no it is not forced nor a gimmick for Rihanna–her being comfortsable with her sexuality has always been a part of Rihanna once she started to grow up into the Rihanna we know and love today so even putting her in the category as Miley for gimmicks is insulting to the Navy on a very high level. Her first iconic video, Umbrella proves as much

  155. LETS BE REAL. December 16, 2013

wow. so apparently beyonce can do no harm. first of all, these women are straight up SYCOPHANTS. miss me with the “straight to the fans, no record label” bs, those videos were EXPENSIVE AS HELL, and you know the record label footed the bill. it’s ridiculous to start approaching beyonce like some indie artist with purely feminist and artistic intentions. you can hear echoes of so many original artists in this gumbo, not to mention the fact that these songs do very little on their own, without the help of the videos. has anyone taken a second to watch some previous beyonce videos? do you see the difference? she is no longer competing against herself, she is competing with everyone and trying to be everything. where is her voice? artists, like everyone, have the right to evolve, but this is a devolution. i love beyonce, and this is not an attack on her or her work. rather, people need to stop projecting this political slant on what is at best an exercise in vanity.

  156. I AM 4 DANGEROUS DAY December 16, 2013
