From legal woes to baby mama drama, Chris Brown is no stranger to being on the receiving end of staunch criticism over the years.
And while he’s kept mum on a number of those topics related to his personal life, the 2-time GRAMMY winner isn’t so tight-lipped about critics weighing in on his professional endeavors – namely his latest album ‘BROWN‘ (released May 8).
Before his dedicated fans across the globe (affectionately called #TeamBreezy) could get their hands on the ‘BROWN’ LP, the 37-year-old hitmaker was already on the receiving end of jeers for the project’s first set of singles: ‘It Depends,’ ‘Obvious,’ and ‘Holy Blindfold.’
To combat criticism of their sonic similarity and artistic devolution, Chris took to Instagram to point music lovers to his Leon Thomas-assisted song ‘Fallin‘ – a Blues-inspired deviation from his usual Hip-Hop-laden brand of R&B.
“Them: Chris Brown makes the same damn song over and over. Me: Aight Bet,” he captioned a now-expired IG story.
Post the album’s release, the R&B superstar tackled more of the project’s mixed reviews from fans and critics head-on.
“Been a lot of mixed reviews and I can take my audience’s criticism and opinions. The last 3 albums have came under the same scrutiny and it eventually grew on people,” he shared on a now-expired IG story.
He wasn’t the only one defending the artistic integrity of the ‘Brown’ album, however.
Fellow R&B veteran Tank – who boasts several collaborations with Chris including 2013’s ‘Shots Fired,‘ 2016’s ‘#BDAY,’ 2023’s ‘See Through Love,’ and the recently released ‘Fallin’ – had a few words for the slew of detractors.
“We [as artists] appreciate the love and support, but we can also understand constructive criticism. The problem is, most of you offer destructive criticism,” Tank said in a lengthy Instagram comment demanding music lovers show artists “some f–kin respect.” “In my opinion, this [the ‘Brown’ album] is some of CB’s best work! From music to visuals to promo, this man is nailing every moment like I’ve never seen.”

Hence why it’s smarter to listen to every other album of his. Or once every 3 albums. I, for one, haven’t checked for him since No Air. That’s why I added 11 songs from Brown to my mindless strolls playlist. Novelty Effect works y’all 🤣
