Scribbled in history books for some good and not-so-good reasons, 2016 brought with it some of modern music’s most memorable moments.  Now, as the year draws to a close, TGJ is reflecting on 31 moments that rocked – and to some degree shaped – the Urban and Pop musical landscape as we know it.

Next, we say farewell to the juggernaut singing competition that literally changed the face of reality TV as we know it:

Report (May 2015):

One of the most successful reality series ever,American Idol, will end its run after one final season. Fox has renewed the venerable music competition series for a 15th season, which will be its last. Coming back are host Ryan Seacrest, who has been on the show since Day 1, as well as the judges for the past two seasons, Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick, Jr. In addition to the competition, Season 15 also will reflect on the show’s run and some of notable alumni.

After years of collecting some of America’s best singing talent from inaugural winner Kelly Clarkson to Grammy winners Jennifer Hudson, Fantasia, and Carrie Underwood, the series aired its final episode on April 7, 2016.

Fantasia, Kelly and Ruben were the only winners for me.
There are a few contests that should’ve done better but tbh after Simon and Paula left so did the spark. The early days were the best though.

But what about other stars who saw major success in the entertainment industry like Katherine McPhee, Chris Daughtry, Jordin Sparks, Jennifer Hudson, Adam Lambert, William Hung, Phillip Phillips, etc.?

This show did produce some talent. I couldn’t tell you a few people from The Voice who had success.

I beg to differ that it lost spark without the original panel. They were good, but its always good to change things up. Ellen was a pointless judge though I admit. Every other judge on the show, even Mariah and Nicki (though not the career move for Nicki and Mariah couldn’t articulate knowledge despite being a legend) all made sense musically speaking.

I really enjoyed the revamp of Randy, Jennifer Lopez, and Steven Tyler come season 10. That was the best panel after Simon, Paula, Randy IMO. But I still find strengths in all TBH.

      • Boosie December 27, 2016

Although talented those artists didn’t do it for me regardless of success.
Imma stick to my point about the judging panel, but that’s the beauty of opinions we can all share ours.
        Without being hostile.

I will miss this show so much. I grew up with it and remember watching it with my family as a kid. It was really cool to root for and spot the talent yourself. Say what you will, but this show was good entertainment and still had impressive ratings when it ended (around 8m).

What I loved about this show more than I ever have even enjoyed or liked about The X Factor or The Voice… is that this show was never over produced. Sure it had some sob stories but the show and performances were just that, a performance. As if you went to see someone at a concert.

This show did revolution TV whether you hate, like or love it. I won’t be mad when the day comes when they decide to bring American Idol back, I hope it will retain the energy and spunk it had during its 1st 15 seasons.

Thanks for all of the entertainment, laughs, family time, etc. American Idol. Salute!

they must take xxxltina, rima , lol and other basics with them

Good. American Idol shouldn’t have made it out of the 00’s, just trivialized the journey to stardom, and furthermore most of what came out of that show failed to go on to real super-stardom. I’m hoping all the other silly “reality” competition shows that it inspired die off too.

Mariah and icki were the death of that show.

As much as I love Xtina, The Voice needs to go. It is a joke at this point. Out of the 11 seasons not one contestant has had any kind of mainstream success. Unlike The Voice, Idol has produced a fair share of successful stars, from one hit wonders like Daughtry to Golden Globe winners like J-Hud to bread winners like Kelly Clarkson and so forth. The Voice is just about the coaches and is exhausted and spent. And I honestly want to see it go, along with singing competitions in general. They’re played out.

    • MusicFan103 December 27, 2016

Daughtry is not a 1-hit-wonder band. Their debut had like 4 top 20 hits on it. “Its Not Over” “Home” “It Feels Like Tonight””Over You” What About Now.” Perhaps PPhillips could be called a 1 hit wonder due to his hit with “Home.”

Fantasia was the biggest failure she will never when I’m so glad Jennifer Hudson is blocking hercareer, fantasia now trying to clean up her career, and nobody checking for her, all of jhuds albums are better than fantasias point blank, jhud is the american idol emperess and fantasia is the peasant collecting scraps, and jhud sells out stadiums and well fantasia sells out auditoriums

    • Beyoncé Jackson December 26, 2016

You’ve got to be kidding me lmao. Musically, Fantasia is far more revered than J.Dud. She has way more hits, sold more albums and draws way bigger audiences. J.Dud is successful too in terms of endorsements, Broadway and doing tributes on award shows. What stadium has Jennifer sold out? Ki.

You’ve got to be kidding me lmao. Musically, Fantasia is far more revered than J.Dud. She has way more hits, sold more albums and draws way bigger audiences. J.Dud is successful too in terms of weight watchers, Broadway and doing tributes on award shows. What stadium has Jennifer sold out? Ki.

      • MusicFan103 December 27, 2016

Yeah J.Hud is more famous for all of her non music related ventures.

  8. Elsie December 27, 2016

Look it up jhud sold out a stadium bunny and her albums are critically acclaim, she has an Oscar, which fantasia will never see, jhud can book a gig, movie and an award show stage jhud works with top notch producers, and musical peers, she is always praised by her peers, she is an A-list celeb, name top artist that praise fantasia and want to work with her, what movies she been casted on, what award shows she booked,

    • Phaedra December 27, 2016

Jennifer hasn’t sold out any stadiums stop lying. She doesn’t even have a platinum album. She hasn’t done anything special since Dreamgirls. At this point she’s just a karaoke singer.

    • MusicFan103 December 27, 2016

I wouldn’t call J.Hud A-list because A-listers albums sell and have hits on the Hot 100. I don’t think she has 1 Top 15 hit on the chart.

    • Leah December 27, 2016

*tears*. How is Jhud selling out stadiums when she can’t even sell albums or singles? Go home you’re drunk!

  9. Elsie December 27, 2016

So yall just gon forget when she sold out some stadiums during her dreamgirls stint it was 2 or 3, because she was everywhere, well she has a Grammy Oscar golden globe and all she needs is a tony and an emmy and that will be all she wrote, she is about to work with babyface so get ready, because clearly she will be the Whitney Houston of our generation, and y’all know she going to sweep that emmy up for hairspray… Fantasia girl just go get on hooked on phonics and stay off of married men’s pickle, girl her and Alicia should be the best if friends since they have a lot in common, girl ciara bay and rihanna don’t even know what a fantasia is, Jennifer has A-list friends, Jennifer has a hot 100 hit, “spotlight”

    • Lovatic❤️ December 27, 2016
