In what has been sure to garner strong reactions from both sides of the fence, the MTV Video Music Awards 2011 supposed snubbing of Rihanna is a topic that will be sure to remain hot on every one’s lips until the event itself is over.
Being excluded from all the major categories, including Best Pop Video and Best Female Video, the only time the singer’s name appears in the nominations is when it is following the name of the act whose music she featured on.
With Katy Perry leading the way with a ground breaking set of nominations and with even budding acts such as Tyler The Creator and Kreayshawn finding their way into one category or another, could MTV be punishing the ‘SOS‘ singer for the controversies she incurred earlier on this year?
There is the fact that she is being sued by two world renowned photographers who both claim her ‘S&M’ video was nothing more than a shameless rip off of their work and then of course there is the ‘Man Down‘ video.
The video which saw her come under fire from the Parents Television Council who claim the visual like the song itself incited violence.

S&M was definately…inspired….by Dave LaChapelle but it was a great visual effort and deserved a nod IMO. It was her best video this era, all the rest were definately disposable, except maybe Man Down.

MTV hasn’t cared much for Rihanna since the GGGB era. I clearly remember the video for Umbrella dominating the VMAS back in 2007. But for the past couple of years, it’s like she no longer exists for them.
I could understand them ignoring her just this era, since almost all of her videos so far have been wack. S&M however, was an exception, and that should’ve gotten a few nods at least.
But her some of her videos for the Rated R era did not deserve to be overlooked. Russian Roulette, Rude Boy, Rockstar 101, all had fantastic videos that deserved some recognition. Rude Boy in particular, probably her best video to date. And it happened to be the biggest hit off of that album, so I really don’t get why it was overlooked.
Not to stir up anything, but I wonder if “the incident” has anything to do with MTV avoiding Rihanna like the plague. Because pre-incident, they honestly couldn’t get enough of her.
Well i have been telling Rihannanavy this for a while……..that the music industry really dont care to much for their girl. They are always hyping this girl up…….like she is the second coming of Whitney Houston……..when the only thing she does is the same ol dance records and uses s** appeal……to sell records. People may say this are that about Adele but she has talent. Hell all the people who got multi nominations have serious talent…….except Katy. As I stated in a previous post, the issue I have seen with MTV the past several years is that when an artist irks the hire ups or their fanboys fawn over certain artists someone gets shut out that shouldn’t. Whether a fan or not, Riri was clearly shut out. But aside from great performances, the Vmas have become irrelevant. They dole out noms based on who they have the hots for, whose trendy, whose record company pays the most, etc. Half the videos nominated they haven’t seen because their busy with craptacular programming and force feeding the same five artists who kiss their b***. I’ve seen MTV go from honoring great videos like Thriller, Peter Gabriel’s Sledgehammer, Rem’s Losing My Religion, etc. to “Oh, so and so is trending on twitter. Let’s nominate them.” Then they wonder why the music industry is in jeopardy. And I’m not a stan but for her fans upset take heart. Most people that get heavily nominated for Vmas disappear within a couple years. With the exception of a Prince or Madonna or MJ. But look back at some previous winners from the 80s, 90s.
