justin bieber vevo record history

Much like fellow chart-topper Rihanna, the last year has seen Justin Bieber‘s name and the phrase “breaks (or sets) the record for…” in print seemingly every other week.

In addition to being the youngest person to ever debut at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, breaking the record for most Hot 100 entries in a single week, and only God knows what else, now Bieber can lay claim to yet another title in history books thanks to his Beliebers.

Streaming has not only become the primary means of music consumption by the general public, but it’s also the compass industry insiders use to measure artist popularity.  To accommodate the shift, the last decade has seen Billboard update its longstanding rules on how and what data is included to calculate chart placement multiple times.

In addition to including streaming figures from multiple outlets (i.e. Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora) in its current Hot 100 chart rankings, the Music Bible has revised how those services are weighed within the formula, changed rules on merchandise bundling, and so much more to accurately reflect the public’s taste.

Now, as official video streams have long accounted for a great portion of song placements on the Hot 100, Billboard has revealed their intent to include data from YouTube and streaming services in the sales performance reports, chart placement, and historic rankings of the Billboard 200 (album charts).

Today, we journey back to the very beginning of the century with a track that is enjoying renewed relevance. Santana’s ‘Maria Maria’ is this week’s From The Vault pick.

The flavoursome track was produced by Wyclef Jean who is also listed as a feature act alongside his protégé duo The Product G&B. It was released in late ’99, but eventually reached the highest spot of the Hot 100 – where it stayed for 10 weeks. Like its parent album ‘Supernatural,’ it was a global hit, charging into the Top 10 in the UK (#6) and #1 in France, Germany, and Canada among other territories.

Its accompanying video saw Carlos, Wyclef and G&B all congregate for a Mexican-themed street party. Echoing the song’s lyrics, the clip borrows elements of the ‘West Side Story’ throughout.

‘Maria Maria’ premiered 19 years ago, and with DJ Khaled and Rihanna’s ‘Wild Thoughts’ (which samples the song) currently ruling iTunes and VEVO, it looks like a whole new generation will be able to appreciate its greatness. And we’re all for that!

Beyonce‘s ‘Lemonade’ success is proving to be no quick fizz.

A chart-topper upon release three weeks ago, the set has established itself as a consistent force – both on the streaming and sales front.

The latter has seen the LP sweep up another 155k in the most recent US tracking week; a number which rises to 220k when factoring in Sales-Plus-Streaming.

Next week is shaping up to be another winning window for the project commercially.
