Be it through performance style, music, or visual themes over the years, Dawn Richard has never been shy about being proud of her Louisiana heritage.
That pride takes center stage, however, in the former Danity Kane frontwoman’s new album ‘Creole Culture.’
Her first solo studio effort since 2021’s ‘Second Line,’ the forthcoming opus – due October 9 – is billed as a continuation of the story told by its preceding projects.
“[My 2019 album] ‘New Breed’ was the story of New Orleans through my father’s eyes…’Second Line’ was my mom — her interludes riddled the album with her depiction of what is meant to be a Creole woman in New Orleans. ‘Creole Culture’ is my way of saying that New Orleans culture doesn’t have to live in the past to be authentic. It can be progressive. It can be global. It can be pop culture. It can look like me,” she said in an official statement about the LP.
An 11-track affair, the ‘Creole’ tracklist not only includes the warmly received ‘Baby, Can We?‘ featuring Durand Bernarr but also features guests appearances from the likes of Big Freedia, Anjelika “Jelly” Joseph, Tarriona “Tank” Ball, and more.
To drum even more buzz for the project, Dawn lifted the lid on the new song ‘Enough‘ – a slow-burning groove buoyed by a prominent sample of Sister Nancy‘s 1982 dancehall classic ‘Bam Bam.’
