Lil Nas X strikes matches and poses inside the Autumn 2019 edition of Dazed Magazine.

Acting as the publication’s cover star for its latest issue, the rising star – under the helm of fashion photographer Charlotte Wales, stylist Tom Guinness, art director from Jamie Reid, and creative director Robbie Spencer – the 20-year-old showed off some fierce cowboy-inspired fashion (a nod to his record breaking hit, ‘Old Town Road’).

Dishing on the song’s impact and the idea of introducing the idea of Black cowboys to a younger generation, X also took time to answer hilarious fan questions in a behind-the-scenes interview with the mag.  See what they cooked up inside:

Lil Nas X officially bulldozed Mariah Carey‘s 23-year Billboard record after his hit ‘Old Town Road’ spent its 17th week at #1 on the Hot 100.

As reported, Mimi offered a hearty congratulations to the 20-year-old.

And the rising star has responded with an overflow of gratitude.

‘Meek as a lamb’ may not describe Mariah Carey‘s fan base upon learning their fave’s 23-year-old record for longest running Hot 100 #1 in history was broken today by Lil Nas X‘s megahit ‘Old Town Road’ (as we reported here), but the Pop diva herself has been the shining example of humility.

Just last week telling our friends at The Blast that she wasn’t worried about the 20-year-old breaking the record (click here to watch), today the ‘One Sweet Day’ singer took to Instagram to congratulate X for the achievement.

When Lil Nas X proclaimed he would ‘ride til he can’t no more’ in his hit, ‘Old Town Road,’ it’s evident he was referring to the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100.

For, this week brought with it news the 20-year-old – who has been atop the tally for a whopping consecutive 17 weeks – has officially broken Mariah Carey‘s two decade old record for longest running #1 in history.

“Unbothered” is the name of the game for Pop diva Mariah Carey.

For over 20 years the undisputed Queen of the Billboard Hot 100 and her fans, affectionately called #Lambs, enjoyed the seemingly untouchable record of ‘longest number 1’ – a feat accomplished when her Boyz II Men-assisted tune, ‘One Sweet Day,’ held atop the tally for a whopping 16 weeks in the mid-90s.  Though challenged in 2017 when Luis Fonsi teamed with the likes of Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber to hoist the hit ‘Despacito’ to the chart’s summit for 16 weeks, their failure to nab a 17th week stay at the top kept Carey’s record in tact.

This week, however, a new challenger for the title arose in the form of Lil Nas X‘s megahit ‘Old Town Road.’  Boasting a tool ‘Day’ did not have in its arsenal at the time (streaming), the Billy Ray Cyrus-assisted tune – which has also extended its stay thanks to a number of high profile remixes – earned its 16th week at #1 as revealed by the chart’s most recent refresh (click here to read more).

As industry analysts believe it is likely the 20-year-old will break Carey’s longstanding record, our friends at The Blast caught up with the icon to ask if she was worried about the loss.  Her diva response just served as another reminder of why we love Mimi here at TGJ HQ:

16 weeks is how long newcomer Lil Nas X has held the racehorse that is ‘Old Town Road’ ahead of the competition on the Hot 100.

Keeping the likes of serial hitmakers Taylor Swift, Chris Brown, Drake, Ariana Grande, Ed Sheeran, and many more at bay with the megahit, the steam behind the 20-year-old’s breakout tune has been a mix of controversy, record breaking streaming, and a sh*t ton of remixes (including a new version featuring BTS‘s RM).

Renaming the joint ‘Seoul Town Road,’ in reference to the South Korean capital city of Seoul (where BTS first came together), the move may be just what X needs to edge past Mariah Carey (‘One Sweet Day’) and Luis Fonsi (‘Despacito’) to nab the title for ‘longest run at #1 in Billboard Hot 100 history.’

As we wait with bated breath to find out, look inside to hear the umpteenth remix of ‘Road’ and see who joins Lil Nas in the top 25 on this week’s TGJ Chart Check:

While many showered Lil Nas X with praise after coming out as a member of the LGBTQ community, rapper Young Thug has an alternate take.

Despite attempts from some of Pop’s heaviest hitters including Shawn Mendes, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, and more, the past 15 weeks have seen all of them fail to unseat newcomer Lil Nas X‘s inaugural hit, ‘Old Town Road,’ from the Billboard Hot 100’s throne.

Galloping to the top of the charts on the back of historic streaming figures, the song’s initial popularity may have (arguably) been the result of controversy, but long after that news faded its enduring success can simply be attributed to monster radio airplay, digital downloads, and streaming of its original mix and various remixes.

Earning its 15th consecutive run atop the tally this week, the feat comes with news ‘Road’ is now in history books as the longest running chart-topping debut single ever (leaving the 14 week record of Los Del Rio‘s ‘Macarena’ in its rear view).  As if that’s not enough, the 20-year-old is just 1 week shy of tying the chart’s all time record.

Lil Nas X made history this week when it was announced his song became the first song in over 20 years to go Diamond while still holding the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 (click here to read more).

Now, as it celebrates its 14th week atop the tally, X is looking to extend that reign even further by lifting a new official remix to the megahit.  While the song’s original mix already featured Country legend Billy Ray Cyrus, its remix calls on help from rapper Young Thug and viral Country sensation Mason Ramsey.

Curious to hear what they added to the cut? It awaits inside:

Lil Nas X has already galloped into history books multiple times over the last three months thanks to his inaugural megahit, ‘Old Town Road.’

In addition to stomping all over streaming records previously set by the likes of Drake, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and more, the 20-year-old’s seen the tune – currently #1 for its 14th consecutive week – rival the longevity and impact of some of the Billboard Hot 100’s longest running chart-toppers ever.

Now, as the song continues to fend off competition from the tally’s perch, it is being greeted with new reports that it has been certified Diamond by the RIAA for sales equivalence that has exceeded over 10 million units.  The achievement makes him the second artist to ever reach Diamond status while still occupying the Hot 100’s summit.  In fact, the only other artist to do this was Elton John – who laid claim to the first ever Diamond single with 1997’s ‘Candle in the Wind.’

While we extend our congrats to X, look inside to see who joins him in the top 25 on this week’s ‘TGJ Chart Check: Hot 100’ edition:

‘It was something I was never [going to reveal] ever…just take it to the grave.’

The quote above was lifted from rapper Lil Nas X‘s first televised interview after stunning the music world by coming out of the closet.

The announcement – which the 20-year-old lifted to Twitter on June 30 (‘Gay Pride Day’) – may have been met with overwhelming support for the ‘Old Town Road’ hitmaker, but there were still some who opted to respond with disappointment and even lend homophobic remarks (click here to read). X hit back at the detractors online, but in a recent interview with our friends at BBC he went into detail about how the backlash that followed his big reveal affected him.
