Yes, if the last year has taught to us anything, is that the aforementioned genre’s well publicized downturn can be attributed to the lack of ‘push’ behind it. Push, only a select few of its staples can say they are afforded.
Now, by way of his undying popularity, Justin Timberlake kicks starts what is shaping up to be its chart revival with his new single ‘Suit & Tie‘, featuring Jay Z.
Released to iTunes on the night of its arrival, ‘Tie‘ now sits pretty at #9 on iTunes USA, reaching the spot before it hits radio and the benefit of a single live performance, giving some indication as to how high it might chart once its promo train leaves the RCA station.
However, in what marks its biggest success thus far, the cut now sits at #3 on iTunes UK, posing a serious threat to Taylor Swift‘s ‘I Knew You Were Trouble‘ and Will.i.am and Britney Spears’ ‘Scream & Shout’, likely to secure it a Top Ten position when the nation’s overall charts come in this Sunday.
A testament to the public’s ‘need’ for his material- and his consistent hustle outside of music- his chart ascent is all the more impressive when you consider his last album arrived seven years ago, and that ‘Tie’ is undeniably R&B, which as we all know hasn’t been in the best of places in some time.
As it stands, it only has to rise by two more spots to snatch UK #1 spot from Britney and lead the way for what is shaping up to be the fastest comeback the world has seen in years, giving a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘all in a night’s work’.

You’re right. Instead of fighting for the kind of music he does when it fell out of favor, and being willing to flop in defense of it, Usher became a scared little pretender. Then tried to pretend that his transparent foray into pop music (during its resurgence) was an actually an artistic statement. As a result, everything suffered. His sales. His live performance. His image. I’ve about lost all respect for Usher, and I used to stan for him. Up until 2010, Usher could do no wrong in my book. Now? Eh!
Frankly it’s embarrassing that former Mouseketeer Justin (with his “Tearing Up My Heart” boyband musical roots) was brave and defiant enough to release an unabashedly R&B/Urban song during this anti-R&B climate, while Usher (who comes from church and whose music was always rooted in Soul) opted to straddle the fence; nervously trying to get both sides would embrace him, while neither really did. Hopefully Ush will see this and decide that it ain’t worth it to continue trying to be something he’s not.

The only reason why S&T is smashin on iTunes, is because Timberfake was gone from the music scene for nearly a decade.
S&S had no iTunes banner, radio deal, payola or none of that crap and the song STILL SMASHED anf is still smashin. And unlike Timbersnake, Brit doesn’t need someone featured on her song in order for it to be a success nor does she need the help of the same ONE producer to garner a hit.

The song is good. It is not ground breaking, but it’s completly different from what’s currently hot on the top 40. I think the major problem with this song is that it isn’t instantly catchy. It is not single material for the current music market.
There is nothing bad about this song at all. The production is good, the vocals are on point, Jay-Z’s rap is great, the lyrics are nice. The only people I see calling this song bad are the same who has Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Ke$ha, Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, One Direction and Rihanna’s fast food songs on their iPods. I can’t. It’s funny because they’re the same “artists” that keep running after trends and have the same basic sound.
Justin could’ve called played-out producers like David Guetta, Dr Luke, Max Martin, Benny Blanco or any other hot DJ to produce his new hit, but his sound wouldn’t be different from his peers. He took a risk for swimming against the river.
In the worst scenario, S&T will perform like Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ topping the charts because of the huge hype surrounded it.

I love that he didn’t try to build all this false anticipation and hype over the course of weeks and months. Within a few days of his hype machine starting, we have a single and album title. No trailers, no producers glorifying his work on twitter, no lyrics to songs posted on twitter or facebook. It’s good to see that Justin isn’t following the same practices as so many other artists just to build hype.
I hope he has a successful album for the simple fact that he came straight with it and didn’t try to dick around the public with some insanely elaborate strategy to over-hype his album.
