Without a doubt, Katy Perry‘s video for ‘Part Of Me’ is one 2012’s more ‘thought out’ visuals.
Heralded for its intense theme and the star’s riveting performance in it, the clip has found itself at the centre of controversy this week.
Because, despite being welcomed by her fans, it has been criticized by the feminist Naomi Wolf.

According to Wolf:
The video is a total piece of propaganda for the Marines.
I really want to find out if she was paid by them for making it. It is truly shameful… I would suggest a boycott of this singer whom I really liked – if you are as offended as this glorification of violence as I am.
Gleinn Selig of The Publicity Agency countered with:
In her efforts to boycott the video Naomi Wolf has brought more attention to it,’ he said.
Without her comments, most people would clearly have seen the military simply as a metaphor and not as an attempt by Katy Perry to glamorise the military or war.
Though Wolf may be reading too much into the clip, we do understand why some find it to be frustrating.
For, following the mold of many pieces that claim to ’empower women’, conventional femininity and strength are often presented as parallel traits, never allowed to meet.
In the video. the scorned Perry strips herself of her hair, her breasts,going onto hide her figure in a grey hoodie, all before joining the marines.
This, supporting the the idea that women must be butch and almost boyish in appearance for them to be strong- synonymizing power with masculinity.
Which we’d say isn’t empowering at all.

After watching this video I will say it again, Naomi Wolf can kiss my A$$! This video is not glorifying anything but a woman taking control of her life. She wouldn’t be the 1st to join the military after feeling rejected. Are there any “AMEN” fan’s in the house?…LOL Remember when Thema – after being jilted by the Rev yet again – joined the Army? 🙂

I actually thought about the propaganda thing when I watched it. Has anyone seen “Act of Valor?” it looks exactly like this video did lol. It’s basically a Navy commercial that is two hours long.

I think that people just need to calm their tits. I joined the military as an escape from a life i HATED and i LOVE It now. people do that in REAL life. Boycotting a video won’t do s***, and I don’t see how it is feminist at ALL. It tells a true story and I don’t see how it can offend anyone. it is an opinion. And if YOU don’t like it, DON’T WATCH IT.
