Mariah Performs ‘Hero’ On Smap x Smap

Published: Tuesday 3rd Jun 2008 by Sam
Continuing along the promo trail in Japan, diva Mariah Carey performed her 1993 classic ‘Hero’ on the show Smap x Smap today. Check out the performance below:

Hmm. I guess she’s had worse performances this go-round, so this wasn’t that bad in comparison. Saying that, it really drove home the fact that her voice, as we knew and loved it, is done.

Mariah herself has stated in certain interviews that she has nodules on her vocal chords, which wear and tear over the years have strained. Surgery to repair the damage threatens her ability to hit her trademark whistle note. I say she go and has the surgery; for if she keeps turning in such sub-par performances (which seems to be the overwhelming majority these days), her legacy will be damaged way more than if she were to lose the whistle register. After all, her voice wasn’t only famed for being able to hit the odd high note – it’s power, purity and effortless delivery was what set her above her peers. In any case, it’s more than obvious that something needs to be done. {Thanks Stevie}

I aint no big mariah carey (at all) but I actually thought she handed the situation very well. She adjusted the notes still in key with the music so she was able to at least sing the words.

Much better than Whitney’s current performances lol (who i am a fan of) and kinda better than i expected. Ok i mean it is a shame about her vocals not being as tight as they once were but as humans we get old and things change. She’s still able to hold up a performance (even if she does sound a bit weak at points). Well done mariah

As for Nodules, thats a damn shame if true and something not to joke around about. I wouldnt wish that on any singer (esp. not the top selling ones)

I like Mariah , but i am not a fan. i think singers have to think about their voice all time cuz if they lose it the nearly lose everything.

Mariah was good at this performance but maybe she has to rest a bit ( i mean her voice), and as she getting older her voice wont be the same but she can save it if she wants…

At this point she will have her up’s & down with her voice with nodules on her throat. Sam you might say something has to be done but there are not many options because an operation can make thing worse ex. Julie Andrews. Hopefully she can find a way to fix this matter because she is truly a talent that I respect and enjoy. Overall the hero performance a job well done.

Not that bad, but she definitely could be better. Mariah’s best days are clearly behind her though. She used to perform this song so well.

To the person that said it’s much better than Whitney’s current performances…are we hearing the same thing? Whitney’s regaining her voice and is sounding the best she has in years based on that festival in Morocco a week or two ago. Mariah can’t keep up now, and something needs to be done before she loses the little voice she has left! Other than that, I agree with what you said.

I find that people are a little to harsh cith mariah’s performances, it is clear that the latest promo hasen’t been that good but her voice is still there (fly like a bird on american idol, or at the grammy’s a few years back or the latest bet special…) i just think she’s one of the performers whose voice just can go through it all anymore. for mariah good performances = a lot of rest and no talking at all but when ure promoting all that just can’t be hense the semi-decent performances

she aint do too bad this time…nodules is a serious thing i mean i can understand where she coming from she can hit notes as high as a whale..i wouldnt want to loose that either hell

I don’t too much care for Mariah (Janet Stan for LIFE..lol) but damn, you go hard on her ass.

I think Mariah could do better if she tried harder. She can still sing but all of recent performances lack energy. Maybe she is on something…

She’s not a great vocalist anymore, all she have now is hype. no one beside her most loyal fans and supporters cares about her or about her skills as an artist, the interesting stuff she used to do it’s gone, and her talent it’s overrated. Then i don’t know why some people bothers so much to explain why she’s not on point or why that average performance is or not a pre-recorded one, does it matter!? no! it’s not about her voice or good music, her work became generical, ‘funny’, decent at his best.

Um, what was this duet thing?

I agree with the whole resting thing, she sounded great on Americna Idol Live, Fly Like A Bird was flawless. I guess she just can’t do the wear and tear anymore.

I also imagine that she wouldn’t want surgery for fear of damaging her voice. If the alternative is lots of rest, I’d rather do that too.

Poor Mariah, she’s been through a lot, mediocre upbringing, nervous breakdown and now the voice. I’m not sure how resting helps i mean, going from not talking to whistle pitch must be a massive strain on anyones vocal so maybe (if its not too late) she should get the nodules removed and resume normal activities or she could retire and become a vocal coach.

    It’s all bullsh*t! 🙂

1st – There was nothing wrong with her voice. She did it all like she used to do it years ago…

2nd – I guess not all of you here have listened to that, I call it “Hawaian”, version of the song. I heard it first on a video of one of her tours some 10 years ago I think. And it sounded exactly the same… Maybe you should try to find it and listen to it to see if there’s any difference in her singing it then…

3rd – Mariah just let the other singers do some parts of the song. Though they were not that good and it was a little hard for her to tune in with them… :))

    That’s all…
