Despite kicking off to a great start, Janet Jackson‘s ‘Up, Close, & Personal Tour’ has attracted critique from a select sect of her fans.
Mainly based in the US, the group have voiced their displeasure with the apparent recycling of setlists and costumes on the trek from the singer’s 2008 ‘Rock Witchu Tour’.
Unimpressed, the tour’s lead choreographer (and Jackson’s close friend) Gil Duldulao today wrote an open letter to fans. Therein, he relayed his anger at fans who “can’t see the bigger picture” – one which sees this tour serve as a prelude to a new album, and thus creating way for a bigger full-on spectacle thereafter.

Dear fans,
Of course after the opening I was expecting lots of opinions. The initial talks of an up close and personal tour was janet’s feeling to how she did radio city music hall. She enjoyed herself being up close and in intimate settings and wanted to bring it to the fans. So this is why she is on this tour.
Why spend money on new everything when u have a show up and running and its an intimate setting? Its to celebrate her and her number one songs. Well why is it the same set list? I’m not a musician nor do I hear what her or the musical director is hearing. These songs seem to bleed and blend into each other. I’ve suggested some changes but yet again, I’m not a musician. Certain songs just work with each other. So if there were to be changes in future, then it will be added on to the set list where it fits well. Only a musician can understand that, yet we sit here and complain about a set list they heard…. I’m sorry….if there wasn’t a set list , there would be no concert.
Janet is on a good streak right now. Everything looks great. All she needs is prayers to make it through and do all shows, not grumbling cause ur not getting what you want. Have u taken to account what happened last tour? She got sick. Why not prayers instead of grumbling. Let her prove to the nay sayers that she is back, not sick and won’t get sick ever again and fulfill her duties. You don’t know what it takes to get something like this together. Be glad that faith is back from people in the touring world to put this up, because after those cancellations, u never know if they would trust her to tour again. So STOP it now! Let her ride this amazing ride, get in back with good graces, and then when she drops her album, then we r trusted in every way to give u the show u want! A big big show in every way. But because of last tour, I could see how the big heads r skeptical….”Will she make it through this year of performing ? Cancellations? Well fuck yall, pray for her. Support her. And love on her that we r on tour. A second chance. So that once all is done and dates fulfilled all across the world, then we have even more to do a big big tour. But of course, need an album and hits, then big tour….do u not ever see the big picture? I may not be what u want a choreographer to be or at times, maybe not approachable as u like me to be but this is me. This is how I am with my friends. But I’ve been here by her side through a lot a shit. She is in the good. She is on a great ride. Press, life, happy love. Things negative r dying down. Its all a process. But yet ur not satisfied and not thinking about the bigger picture and what was done in the past that we have to do certain things to do what we want in future or to make yall more happy. Relax and all I ask is u appreciate that she’s on tour, go support her and love on her in every city, and pray for her. With all this negativity is not gonna get u or her anywhere. Seriously. Think about the past, think where she’s at now and pray as she makes this world tour of number ones and expect big things in the future cause she fulfilled her commitments.
Yes I’m sure- I’m a dick for blocking people who got something to say. Just don’t come at me with some nonsense if u haven’t thought big picture or u don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes. Just appreciate and love on her at this time. She needs all of us and prayers, be glad she on tour and expect a bigger one after album drops. But this is what it is now. Her hits her up close and personal, no glitz and glam, just us enjoying her music. I don’t care what the hell I’m wearing on stage cause I love her and I really love her music. I enjoy performing it.
Get another perspective is all I ask and think bigger picture. Please. I may seem like a dick all the time cause I’m constantly trying to defend her. U weren’t there on the inside to know the struggle to be where she is at now. Some may thought she may never have another chance to tour again after last one and or even dumb ass super bowl. But we are here! And doing it. And proving we r here and not going away.

For yours truly, it was as clear as the sky is blue that this tour was always going to be more about re-building her fanbase and, of course, her corporate relations. Indeed, I’d put good money on the dates having already been picked out before the apparent “vote for your city” gimmick was put in play (which, in light of all the sold out dates – is proving very smart). In any case, I commend her team; for, being an artist of Janet’s caliber, it’s great to see her team thinking and acting wisely to re-establish her brand.
Gil’s incessant reference to a new album further highlights that her camp clearly have their eye on the prize. From successful movies, to successful tours, to a (fingers crossed) successful album. It’s all popping off (again) for Ms. Jackson. In a big way. Why not enjoy it?

No, he shouldn’t be telling the fans what to think and instead he needs to make a change in what HE’S doing. Janet’s not in control of prices though, she’s making a huge comeback and her team knows the CAN have this insane prices because her fans will come no matter what. That’s like saying MJ didn’t care about his fans because of the price of the “This Is It” tour. I’m not even a huge Janet fan, in fact I haven’t liked her new music in years [excluding “Nothing”] but I’m still going to speak the truth and defend Janet when it needs to be done.
In Gil’s defense, I don’t think he’s responding to the fans who actually paid money to see Janet. It’s obvious at this point in her career that if they went, they are diehard fans and would see her regardless. I think he is addressing naysayers on blogs like KelzRowland to be honest.

I’m a Janet fan but she is charging premium prices for the tickets. That last tour was not her best so it does not bode well for a repeat of that show. With so much at stake for her she should have had a new show. She is considered an Icon and at that level you never repeat a show. It’s simply not done by any superstar. With that said I’m going in NYC and hoping to be blown away as i really want her to get her groove back.

It’s been a while since she has done it because she had been doing movies for the past 2 years and a half. Plus the set list is different because she is only performing her number ones. On the last tour she performed songs that were not singles on the radio like Discipline or Never Letchu Go. Also she performed songs from the pre-control days so it will be very different than the rock witchu tour. Lets just support our girl plus she is honoring 20 young people in each city for doing good things in their community. I mean she is just a great person and performer. Gil, the fans aren’t complaining because a real fan doesn’t complain when one of their favorite artist comes to a venue near them. I find it so ridiculous that some of the people keep going into Janet’s posts when they “don’t like” her, but can’t even go to posts about their “favorite” because they know it’s too hard to defend their own celebrated celebrity.
The people that talk s*** about Janet on this site almost everyday can chew on baby d****. And if you’re feeling guilty you should. Haters are more so confused fans than they are enemies. Janet will always be the relevant topic of conversation. I won’t even try to defend Janet anymore and school anyone on her current or past accomplishments in her 20+ year career.

I love Janet, but I don’t like Gil speaking on her behalf. He’s rude, unprofessional and lacks the tact needed in explaining anything Janet is doing. Janet is a person who is above all the gossip and hate. She exemplifies class and would never give any of this her attention. He’s working on the inside and is apart of her camp and anything that would need addressing should be and kept confidential! There’s not any need to air something out that is too personal, because that would only allow for things to get misconstrued. Yes, Janet is making up for her cancellations from the RWU tour. She was ill and it’s a blessing that she’s in great condition where she can perform in 35 cities and give her fans what she wasn’t able to before. His harsh words were very unnecessary and not to mention ridiculous! The fans make you! This applies to any artist. There are some people that are simply voicing their opinions – because they dislike something, that doesn’t mean it’s not valid. There’s a difference between constructive criticism and hate. You can read the comments here and tell the difference. Gil should never get so beside himself that he tell Janet supporters to get a refund if their not pleased. How dare he even feel so entitled. He even seem to be blaming Janet for the costume changes – he suggested that some be made, but he’s not a musician. He is talking to slick for my taste and I think Janet should let him go! Seriuosly! This is bad business. I could care less who thinks he’s a d*** and who he does respond well to. I admire Janet, the artist – not her choreographer! He’s so out of line. I’m sure Janet, has new music and alot of things on the table. That was what I expected, but let Janet handle her own business and give her fans what she wants to. For now on anything pertaining to her, I’d prefer to hear from the horses mouth!

Girl got a lot of criticism from a lot of fans, and for a good reason; many of us feel the tour is a watered down version of RWU tour and many of us thought she meant it when she said it’ll be a completely different show. Gil wrote a very humble letter asking for our understanding, and explained the situation to us. That’s all what happened.
You people need to stop trying to make this bigger than it is. Gil did not attack us, neither did he want you to use his words against other members in order to blacklist and label them. You need to grow up and see it for what it is, instead of trying to generalize and dramatize the situation.
I think that Ms Jackson should be allowed to dp whatever her heart desires…No matter what!

I’ll say this, Janet Jackson isn’t the first major artist to do a shoestring budget tour, to reach more audiences and give them what they want. Prince (1990’s “he N*** Tour”), Kylie Minogue (1998’s “Intimate & Live,” 2009’s “For You, For Me Tour”), Mariah Carey (2009/2010’s “Angels Advocate Tour”), Madonna (1993’s “The Girlie Show”), and many more of their stature have done scaled back shows in their careers. Typically they are met with solid sales & good reviews, because it takes a back to basics approach. Not to be frank, but I know the Rock Witchu tour was not cheap to make, and if she wants to repackage some of her backing dancers outfits, and tweak hers a hair, so be it. As long as she rocks the stage, that’s all that matters. Clearly, people want to see her due to demand and the tickets solid sales. Also, while I advocate fans expressing themselves, Janet’s fan in the last decade have become notorious for their negativity, sheisty attitudes, and bandwagon mentalities. It isn’t about licking ass, but when nothing the woman does, I MEAN nothing pleases you, leave the good ship Janet Jackson & call it a day.

I’ve been to Jan concerts only nine(?) times but I did not attend the previous one. I’ve been in Jan’s dressing room with her, been backstage four times and to the 96 Billboard awards as a guest. I’ve met Gil, Tina, Rene, Tish, Omar, Shawnette, Nikki, Kelly, Tice and others. Guess what(?) …Janet Jackson has been my favorite artist since the transition from acting to the first album (Janet Jackson -1982). I know she’s not a celebrated vocalist. I don’t need to know what she’s doing every “minute” of the day nor what her family is up to. What I do care about is that Janet Jackson exudes a “pheromonic” call for respect that’s deeper than the socially conditioned, materialistic and shallow garbage too many youth grow up thinking is beneficial or even mandatory to life.
**There have been great concerts …where I’d wondered if another celeb was in the crowd …causing Jan to dance grooves into the stage floor …BEYOND her usual “blow the roof off moves”.
*I’d only had a mild complaint once …many years ago. It seemed Jan was just going through the motions on stage but you know, who doesn’t have a bad day? …a bad week, month, life?
I WILL SAY THIS, too many people are concerned with (even arguing about) what celebrities do and which celebrities are “better” than another. * ** My take (and fact) is they do a job the same as we do (at least some of us). Some are the same as the neighborly man or woman who lives down the street. Jobs of the famous just put them in front of the camera …in public eye. Being famous is not always the easy life or the dream “we” think it to be. Often (as with us) celebrities take chances with projects and never truly know when they will need to find something else to do …just as we sometimes have to do. Just as in our lives, the decisions they make in life are not going to please everyone. Nothing is guaranteed.
Meanwhile, in the end, the diligence, sometimes sacrifice and tears of a celeb has put money into THEIR bank accounts …NOT OURS …yet “we” feel we have the right to complain. *Gil may not be my favorite Jan choreographer but hear this, he works his ass off and gets the job done well enough to be where he is today …as have others before him.

She has never, ever rode Michaels coat tail by any means. If you go back and look at old footage when she was just 6 years old playing Mae West and had the hearts of America with her sassy impersonation of the iconic figure, people took notice. In fact, she started off in the entainment industry at a much younger age than Micheal. Her dancing is more urban hip hop and Michaels is more pop locking/break. Her music comes in variations, just as her brothers and other artist who dare to have a cd with rock/pop/soul R&B – it shows artistry. There is no doubt that she has made her mark in the music industry and because music has changed and artist are out to make a quick buck for a quick f*** ala’ beYAWNcy – Miss Jackson has built the house that Ciara, beYAWNcy, Britney live in. If it were not for Miss Jackson, no one would have ever heard of these other chics. I must add also that the only reason beYAWNcy has a record deal is because of her swindling/corupt daddy. I absolutely LOVE Janet, but I must say as someone who supports her world tours I expected a better production value of her set design and costumes. Some of the costumes have been reused from the Rockwitchu Tour. I think that the easy change she could make to the tour is new costumes and a few adds in on the stage design to give the stage a more grand design and modern appearance. I’ll definitely be supporting the tour when she arrives her in the states but I just really feel that she should change up the tour outfits and enhance the stage design, since fans here have seen the Rockhwitch Tour a few years ago. Everyone is fighting over what! Janet being a legend? Oh please when was that made official. Janet is finished! She is forgotten already. Give credit where it is due. She can dance but is an average singer and lipsinc all the time. Can’t the blind fans see? Men lie, women lie but numbers don’t. How many albums did Janet produced and how many certifications she has in 27 yrs. Not much! Beyonce has been her for 12 yrs with 3 albums and has leading certifications of 64 and more to come and crown queen of pop from billboard and accomplished 5X more than what Janet did in 27 yrs. I compare her to Beyonce because Beyonce is the only artist on her way to being legendary until official. She has received about six legendary award including International artist of excellence, only artist after MJ. Why didn’t Janet get it? including the others? Some people are just in Denial.

I just love the idea of the personal tour, here in EUROPE we cant wait, people are dying over here (the netherlands) for new dates! In ASIA the press are loveable about her new tour! This is just a new fresh start!

Gil is a d***** bag! His choreography sucks, he’s nothing but a dingleberry and an enabler. He is a yes-man and a tag along. Nobody likes him. If janet fired him today, he would have to get on welfare because I doubt he would be able to find another choreography job, because it sucks so bad…and what sucks more than his choreography is his attitude! Likeability important! Especially if your work sucks! If you’re not an amazing choreographer, you have no right to be arrogant.
His 15 minutes of fame have been up for a long time. Im shocked that Janet still has him around! she usually kicks people to the curb by now. She must not have anyone waiting in the wings. Someone please find her a new buddy to replace him with so she can send his corny ass on his way.
Janet needs to stop putting her career in the hands of her so called friends! She’d rather give a friend a job than have a solid product! And I need prayers to get my money back on the Denver show… $80 to sit at the very back, where the sound was terrible, and for a show where Janet was not on stage for more than one hour (given video footage, band interlude and most songs not being sung in their entirety). Costumes?! She wore jeans and tank top throughout the whole show. Loved the dancing! However, feel completely ripped off – hope everyone involved in the show enjoys the fans’ hard-earned money!!! (Oh, and I have been to 100s of shows of many different bands, obviously some better than others, but have never been inclined to want a refund, or even express my disappointment in writing, until this show.)
I love her dance moves. I love the way she sings. I love the way she talks. I cried when Michael passed away. It was like my brother died..thats the truth. I love her movies. I grew up watching her on tv. Janet got her on style and swag. Im not going to compare Janet to any other female singer.Janet been in the game to long and she is very smart. I have been a Janet fan since I was 7; I am now 34 years old. I have every album, I have seen every video, and I have gone and followed Janet to different states to see her tour. I have always defended her in everything she has done. I have introduced people to her music that was not familiar with all of the different aspects of her music. With that said you are not going to sit up here in a letter and address it to us fans. Her true fans have always been here, and we will always support her. So please don’t make this about her, this is about you.
I am sorry I agree with the opinion of, you’re not fit for Janet. I have watched your moves in many videos and can see more of a relaxed look. How about you do your homework and watch Janet back in the 90’s and Janet now. Her moves are not hard hitting and edgy, they are following the flow of every other artist. Now don’t get me wrong, I am not saying you’re a bad choreographer. I can see you working with newer artist like Kei$ha. These are people who do dance songs, barely move in their video. Janet needs a choreographer that will push the envelope.
I understand that this tour was recycled, and that’s fine. This tour was based off of the greatest hit album. I am not mad at that. I am mad at the fact that the dance routines are always not a good fit for her, barely goes with the music and is not cohesive with her style. I am also a little bit upset that she decided to not come here, until the second leg of tour. I went all the way down to Texas to go see her because I didn’t think she was coming here. Which I was surprised because Detroit has always supported her. That hurt big time. Then she did eventually come here as a second thought. I do have some issues with this tour. Janet has disappointed me a little; however, you pissed me off. How are you going to sit up here and cuss out her fans? How are you going to sit up here and tell us what to do?

Gil, you are talented but your style is so f’n wrong for her. She needs to hit beats hard and not some weird quarter beat bulls hi* moves. Her stylist needs to be fired. She is trying to look new but it just looks bad because her stylist is an idiot and thinks that drop crotch is new. That was 2 years ago. Most of all, she needs to get back to her roots. She needs to realize that she is “blacker” than most people in the industry without having to change her demeanor. She knows more about R&B than most people. She needs to start sampling again with J&T with the Supremes/Sly/MOTOWN, etc. The dance is a major part and it doesn’t fit…AT ALL. And it’s not regressing to dance the way you feel you should dance. She looks like she is doing a routine when she does your choreography.
furthermore, watch her 1987 grammy performance. If that were on today, I’d be on the floor dying because of how good it is…in 2014.

That guy Gil only has to choreograph half of the show since most of her hits already have “famous” and memorable dances already. Yet I am etching her new live shows and the dancers are pretty much doing filler s*** in between hit songs. You go Gil! Seriously, love her but someone needs to come and clean house.
