Mariah Carey is to be honored at September 7th’s BMI Urban Awards, for her contributions to Pop music which span an impressive two decades.
The icon will be awarded in the company of her industry peers at the Beverly Hills event – which takes place shortly before the expected release of her long awaited new studio album.

BMI’s official release reads:
BMI Icons are selected because of their “unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers.” As the 2012 honoree, Mariah Carey will join ranks that include The Jacksons, Snoop Dogg, George Clinton, James Brown, Isaac Hayes, Little Richard, Al Green, The Bee Gees, Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton, to name a few.
Mariah Carey is one of the most prolifically successful songwriters of the last several decades in any genre of music. With her distinct five-octave vocal range and the finesse with which she scaled it, Carey defined the modern pop performance, delivering the songs she wrote with awe-inspiring grace and power.
Well done Mariah!
A nod we agree she’s deserving of, there is little doubt this news will spark interest in her upcoming LP even further, especially if fresh details arrive shortly after she collects her award.

Mariah is one of the greatest songwriters of the last two decades. She should be in the songwriters hall of fame right about now.
This woman is a REAL songwriter, and many of her 18 #1 hits were co-written by her. Mariah should start writing for others artists.
She doesn’t even get the recognition she deserves most of the time for her songwriting. She is one of the only pop divas of her time to write her own songs.

LAST DIVA STANDING. She been writing her own songs since before it was the “in” thing to do as music sales dropped. Now days everyone adds a line or a word to a song and gets a “co-writing” credit, but Mimi been handling it since the inception of her career. D-I-V-A!

Exactly, back in the day you were a songwriter like Mariah or you weren´t like Whitney or Celine but you were honest about it and everybody knew it was enough cos of their huge vocal talent. mariah and dolly porton are so under rated when it comes to song writing you know how many hit songs they wrote. im glad they finally getting the attention they deserve. Isiah Classic Food is available on kindle.
mariah, dolly porton, and ashanti the dream, and neyo, ciara. are real songwriters. they actually writes their on verses and hooks and comes up with their own melodies. Most these artist today (ie justin bieber) just goes in and change and/or add a word or two just to get a writers credit. i heard rapper trina has a ghost writer

FINALLY! Mariahs getting something she deserves, her song writing skills are so underrated! Writing and co writing all of her songs is huge, esp for being in the music industry so long and having many albums produced. Why is she getting this now? she should have got this award years back!!!!!

Mariah is not only a songwriter, she is the most successful songwriter of the last 2 decades, including 17 of her 18 #1´s in the US. This was confirmed by Billboard, and this was including every songwriter who writes songs for many different people (which means having more possibilities to feature on a #1 song)
So well deserving
I have to say I think this time they are preparing Mariah´s next album campaign better, like they did with The Emancipation of Mimi, cos the last two were too rushed (they released singles without having the album finished, etc)
After losing Whitney I´ll stand by Mariah even more now. There are very very few true greats still working on albums. In fact Mariah is the youngest of the true greats. Sorry for everybody who came after
